And Down the Stretch They Come in the Squirtacular

Hockey Day Minnesota celebrated with Squirt Hockey's finest

There were 21 games at the YHH Squirtacular on Saturday.  Games played at all 3 levels.  Our first look at the C's produced some really exciting play, there was a great shootout in our first game between two top 10 teams from District 6, and we got a chance to see two teams from Illinois compete. After today's games hockey fans will have a much better sense of who will move on and who will go home.

Nick Mikan scores on a breakaway for Edina against Eagan.

Morning Games

In the first game of the day, Edina White took on Prior Lake in what most would say would decide the pool Champion.  The final score was 4-4. It was a fantastic game with some outstanding individual performances. Both sets of fans left dejected lamenting chances lost to win a game that would have likely lifted their team to the Final 8 and a Bye in the first round. Dalton Spratt had two goals for the Lakers and Mark Lund had a pair for Edina including the game tying goal with six minutes to go.

SQA: YHH got it's first look of the new year to see White Bear Lake.  The Bears took on Minneapolis and won 6-0. Chaz Lucius had two goals and Lleyton Roed added two assists for WBL as they cruised to an easy win over the Storm.

SQA: In a game YHH broadcasted, Chaska Chan took out Rosemount and earned a spot into Bracket play with a 3-0 win over the Irish. Sully Scholle had a pretty goal for the StormHawks and Patrick Fontaine made some big saves in goal for CC.

SQB: Jefferson was not a hospitable host taking out Eagan 10-0. Carter Krenke had a Hatty for the Jags and Connor Park added a pair of goals for the west Bloomington gang of skaters.

SQB: The Joliet Jaguars came to town on the heels of three runner up finishes in tournaments.  They faced off against Mahtomedi who had suffered a tough loss the night before to Eden Prairie.  The Zephyrs took out their frustrations on the kids from just south of Chicago beating them 6-0.  Ethan Peterson had the Hatty for Mahtomedi and Nolan Pratumwon added two more for the blue and gold. Joliet Goalie Aiden Hackney faced 32 shots for the Jaguars in the nets.

SQB: Speaking of Illinois, a second team the Cyclones from the Chicago area invaded the Twin Cities and had a little better luck than the Jaguars.  The Cyclones put 38 shots on Burnsville scoring 11 and winning 11-0. Alexander Drobek had four goals and Nick Anderson and Grant Dietz each had a pair for Geneva.

SQA: Kyle Kukkonen had four goals and added a shot off the tournament director's shin prior to the game. Sam Jacobs added three points for the Crimson as they cruised to a 13-0 win over STMA.

Max Burkholder score on a wristshot past Brian Streitz of St. Cloud

Afternoon Games

SQA: Edina Green beat Eagan 13-1 and set up a Saturday night matchup with D6 rival Eden Prairie for the #1 seed in Pool C. An amazing 12 different Hornets scored for Edina. Drew Hatch was only boy with two goals.

SQC: Sibley knocked off Jefferson 4-3...with both teams having a ton of scoring chances in the third period. Lucas Black had the game winning goal for the Warriors and Sebastian Scuehle had a couple twine ticklers. Colton Ganske had a goal for the Jags.

SQA: In a huge game in Pool D that would decide the fate of three teams (these two plus Rosemount). The winner would win the Pool and if CC won with the right score, Rosemount would advance. CC got off to a fast start peppering Brian Streitz with a flurry of shots, but no goals. Cullen Hltner would get loose and take a puck in all alone on Patrick Fontaine from CC and go top shelf to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. CC would get the equalizer early in the second with a nice wrist shot by Max Burkholder.  But the Huskies kept battling and slowly but surely evened out the play with CC, when Hiltner got his second goal of the game to make it 2-1. The Huskies would add two more in the third and win the game and the D pool.  CC will have to wait until Sunday morning to find out their fate.  They head into the Tiebreaker zone with five goals allowed which may be good enough for the first Wild Card spot and a Bye into the Quarterfinals.

SQA: White Bear Lake showed why they are number 2 in the state with a convincing win over Bursville 11-0.  Chaz Lucius had a Hatty and Lleyton Roed and Brandon Keeney each had two for the Bears.

SQC: In probably the most exciting game of the day, Eagan beat Eden Prairie Red in a shootout. Not only did the Wildcats break their heart there, they did it in regulation, too. Eagan scored with 18 seconds left to tie it on a goal by Leighton Olson and then won it on the fifth shooter Rowan Phillips who made a nice move to win it for the Wildcats.

SQA: Jackson Borst collected three more points as Edina White beat MAML 8-0. The Hornets need a shutout over Sibley on Sunday to win their pool.

SQC: Cottage Grove looks to be the class of the C Division.  They beat Minneapolis 12-0. Daniel Hagness had the Hatty for the Wolfpack. They will face District 8 rival Eagan tomorrow morning.

SQC: In another epic Squirt, game Minnetonka took on Rosemount. Tied at 4, and two men short Minnetonka headed into the four on four overtime with just two skaters.  A hockey anomaly. Just a few seconds into the extra session, Tonka got some relief when a Rosemount player got a penalty for Hooking. A minute into OT, Cade Conzemius got loose in front of the Irish net and buried it top shelf for the win.

SQB: Will Schumacher and Tanner Thompson each had a pair of goals for Prior Lake as they outraced Jefferson for a 4-2 win.  It looks like both of these teams will advance into extra hockey on Monday.

Brian Streitz with a big save against CC late in the game.

Evening Games

SQB: Mahtomedi Blue and Kennedy tangled on rink one on Saturday.  In the early going it was a great back and forth game. The Zephyrs scored first on a Carter Irvine goal. Kennedy responded to tie it when Tyler Jost scored for the Eagles.  The Zephyrs were too much for Kennedy from that point on. They scored seven straight to win 8-1.

SQB: Chaska Chan Purple won big over Burnsville. Jonathan Montang and Michah Hutchings each had Hatties for the StormHawks.

SQB: A great battle on Rink 2 between Mahtomedi Gold and Edina Black. Back and forth with only one goal scored, but the scoring chances for both teams were incredible. The lone goal came in the second period when Tayden Erickson scored for the Hornets.

SQA: Brock Faber and Brandon Reller each scored twice for the number one rated Crimson as they rolled past Jefferson 7-1. OMG advances to the Quarterfinals on Sunday.

SQA: In a game live streamed by YHH. Edina outlasted district rival Eden Prairie, 6-4. Evan Pahos had two goals for the Hornets and Drew Holt had a pair of goals for the Eagles. But the Player of the game was Edina goalie Noah Richards who made 26 saves, with several clutch saves down the stretch. Click here to watch a Replay

SQA: St. Cloud clinched a berth into the Quarterfinals with a convincing 8-2 win over Forest Lake. Jack Smith had the Hatty for the Huskies and Jacob Hirschfeld had two goals 20 seconds apart. The Huskies will sit by and wait for their opponent on Sunday morning.

SQA: MAML and Sibley played a scoreless game into the third period. In the third, both teams erupted. Gunner Sibley (fitting name for this game) and Ben Miller each had a goal and assist for MAML as they won 4-2.

SQA: North Branch showed on YHH Saturday why they are a top team in Minnesota. Tucker Sachs and Cody Croal each had a Hatty for the Vikings as they rolled over Burnsville 9-3. Despite facing nearly 40 shots, Pierce Konrath played outstanding for the Blaze. The Vikes will take on White Bear Lake for the Pool #1 seed in a classic David vs. Goliath game aired here on YHH.
