Three Weeks Until Regional Selections Announced

On Sunday, February 23, Minnesota Hockey will unveil it's seedings for the PeeWee and Bantam AA South, East and West Regions. A landmark day for an organization that has been criticized for being dyed in the wool and stodgy.

With a few weeks to go, each game between evenly slotted teams become more and more important.  The seeding process has forced coaches to be more strategic with how they select late season games.

Super Bowl Sunday provides YHH a glimpse of several games that may help or hurt teams down the stretch and shine a bright light for the committee.

Bantam AA

Game 1: Eden Prairie v. Wayzata and Edina/WBL Winner - If the Eagles can win these two Sunday, win the Moose and win their remaining games versus D6 opponents, they look to be in the driver's seat for the number 1 seed in the South Region in Plymouth.

Game 2: Edina v. White Bear Lake - Both teams have a lot of talent, but haven't been able to string together enough quality wins to be T10 team this year. A win Sunday for either team will be a boost in either team's Regional seed, two wins would huge.

Game 3: Burnsville v. Anoka - Anoka is a lock for Regionals, the Blaze have some work to do.  If you study Burnsville's record, they have very few high quality wins. My gut says the seeding committee won't take all seven D6 teams unless it is obvious. A win for the Black and Gold today would make it obvious.

Game 4: Hermantown v. Elk River - The Elks coming off losses to Stillwater and Grand Rapids need to beat Hermantown Sunday to have a chance at the number 1 seed in Regions.

Game 5: Minnetonka v. Centennial - Similar to the Edina/WBL game, this one pairs two teams looking for a big win.  Both of these teams are locks for Regionals.  Either of these teams could be as high as 8 or as low as 14, wins versus the middle tier teams late in the season are very important.

PeeWee AA

Game 1: Andover v. Prior Lake - Andover has some signature wins this year including winning the Paul Bunyan in Bemidji.  Prior Lake is a contender for a #2 seed in Lakeville. Winning the Moose Sunday will go a long way for Lakers. Winning the Moose for Andover may get them in the conversation for a top 5 seed.

Game 2: OMG v. Tonka - Both of these teams have floated between 4 and 8 in Minnesota all year at PWAA. A win today in the Moose would really help their cause for a number 4 or 5 seed in Regions.

Game 3: Lakeville North v. Centennial - Both of these teams are on the bubble. Any late win for these two teams is crucial.

Game 4: Cloquet v. Rochester - Depending on who you ask, Rochester is a number 2 or 3 seed. The Red could use as many wins versus quality opponents as they can get. Saturday they beat Moorhead, a win over Cloquet could get them a top 3 seed in either Lakeville or Anoka.

Game 5: White Bear Lake v. Eden Prairie - The Eagles are certainly in. The Bears still have some work left to qualify. They have played a lot of top competition, but only have a few top notch wins.  A win over EP on Sunday will go a long ways to getting a bid.
