Due to some camera difficulties, most shots were taken with a lower grade camera. We apologize in advance.

The Rink

The City of Coon Rapids built a brand new hockey facility a few years back and YHH wanted to get a first hand view of what was all about. On Thursday night we took in two games: Armstrong Cooper and Coon Rapids in 12A and Jefferson and Coon Rapids in Bantam B on their second sheet which happens to be outside.

The main rink is spectacular. Big enough for a high school crowd, but intimate enough for great atmosphere for a youth or adult league game. The lobby is complete with a very comfortable lounge and waiting area, complete with a fireplace.

The outdoor rink was built with purpose. They have a beautiful scoreboard, great lighting and full plexiglass and dashers.  On a cold night (like Thursday), fans could watch from inside.

The Brand New Coon Rapids Ice Arena...well done

Game 1: Armstrong v. Coon Rapids

The first game was a inter-district battle between Coon Rapids and Armstrong Cooper (AC). AC got off to a fast start, controlling play for most of the first period, but having nothing to show for it after the first period.

Early in the second, AC got a tripping penalty while forechecking the Coon Rapids zone. While shorthanded, Leah O'Brien got loose on a powerplay and beat the Coon Rapids goalie Eliya Johnson on the backhand. At the end of two, Armstrong seemed like they were in control and up 1-0.

For most of the third period, it was just the opposite. Coon Rapids came out firing on all cylanders and scored twice. Alicia Arrellano scored on a pass from Amaya Skillings to tie the game at 1. And then just minutes later, Skillings scored for the Cardinals to make it 2-1.

Armstrong Cooper kept battling until the end. With 2 minutes left, they were still down 2-1, but the good scoring chances seem to just escape them.  But with 53 seconds left they got the puck to the net and Johnson could not corrall the puck and Leah O'Brien scored again in front in a scrum. The score was now tied.

Twent seconds later, AC got another puck to the net and this time the good bounces worked in their favor and Claudia Olson got a puck on her stick and she fired it home with a right handed wrist shot to give AC the lead 3-2. They scored two goals in 20 seconds to first steal a victory and then steal a tie from Coon Rapids, who fought hard the entire game.

Leah O'Brien scores in "blizzard-like" conditions.

Jefferson v. Coon Rapids

Devin Bientema's wrist shot gets him the hat trick

In the nightcap, Jefferson traveled north to take on Coon Rapids on the outdoor sheet.  This game would be the final tune up for both teams as they head into District play.

Both teams played really well in the first period. Testing both goaltenders early, but both were equal to the task. After the first period there was no score.  The first period was also pretty physical, the teams really threw their weight around to establish a presence.

The second period slowed down a bit. The first half of the period was a little sloppy for this time of year. But in the second half of the period, the Jaguars really started to find their stride.  With the puck down low, Nick Lindquist slid a pretty pass to Devin Bientema for a one timer to make it 1-0. Later in the second, after an outlet pass from Jake Zosel, Carsten Rolling made the play of the game while in transition, fed a wide open Caleb Margotta with a backhand saucer pass that wowed even the opposing fans from Coon Rapids. At the end of two the Jags lead 2-0.

The physical play picked up in the third. Both teams got a little feisty. The referees managed the boys well. The other star of the game was Devin Bientema from Jefferson. He added two goals in the third to get the hat trick. Jefferson standout Goalie, Evan Redepenning had the shutout. Final score, Jefferson 5, Coon Rapids, 0.
