Can anyone beat the Big 3?

Elkwater, Stillprairie, Eden River...the 3 best Bantam teams in Minnesota no matter how you spell it.

Eden Prairie's Casey Mittelstadt scores vs. Stillwater earlier in the year.

Arguably the three best teams in Bantam AA this year were Eden Prairie, Elk River, and Stillwater.  Each beat one another, some  even a few times.  And no other team in Minnesota can make that claim.  The big tournaments? You guessed it.  Elk River won the Blue Ox, Stillwater won Eden Prairie and Eden Prairie won the Spirit of Duluth to establish these 3 as the teams to beat. Each won their league titles, too.

Superstars? Yes, each team carries a couple top line forwards and defensemen.  Luke Manning from Stillwater seems to shine every night. As does Jax Murray and his supporting cast in Elk River.  Don't forget Casey Mittelstadt from EP...he has had an outstanding season for the Eagles.

As post season playoffs begin...the top teams will quickly separate themselves from the pretenders. YHH sees these three as locks to move on to Rogers in a few weeks...the other five?  Good question, we will break it down Region by Region.

South Region (Plymouth)

EP beat Centennial at the Blue Ox on a late goal...can they do it again in the Semis?

Eden Prairie v. Rochester - The number one seed Eagles should close out Rochester in the first period.  EP has way too many weapons for Rochester to make it interesting. EP > Rochester.

Centennial v. Anoka - These two teams have played five times, with Centennial taking four of the five games. The Cougars have been red hot lately winning the District 10 title over Elk River on Sunday.  The Tornadoes have been a solid team all year with with several highlights including winning their home tournament. The Cougars will be too much for Anoka. Centennial > Anoka.

Prior Lake v. Blaine - Both Prior Lake and Blaine had great first half's of the season...both adding nice wins to their resume in the early season.  Since then, both teams have been hard to figure out. One week they are up and the next week they are down. Slight edge to Prior Lake. PL > Blaine.

WBL v. St. Cloud - two of the hottest teams in Minnesota. Both still have a lot to prove if they are going to punch a ticket to Rogers. This first game of the tournament is huge for both teams. Both teams have a superstar (Larson WBL, Spethmann St. Cloud) who could be the difference maker in this big first round game. WBL > St. Cloud.

Semis

EP > Centennial

WBL > Prior Lake

Finals

EP > WBL

Play-In

Prior Lake > WBL, YHH thinks sometimes it's easier to win after winning two in a row, rather than losing. PL will get on a roll in the loser's bracket and skate to state.

1 Seed = Eden Prairie

2 Seed = Prior Lake

Prior Lake's Tanner Burggraaff scores earlier in the year vs. Rosemount

West Region (Prior Lake)

Stilwater v. Chaska Chan - Usually a number one seed gets a fairly easy game in the first round of a seeded tournament.  In this case, Stillwater will get anything but a cakewalk versus the StormHawks. Stilwater should win, but they shouldn't overlook CC who has wins in February over Minnetonka and OMG. Stillwater > CC.

Edina v. Lakeville North - Edina and Lakeville North played in the Blue Ox, with the Lakeville North winning late in the game. Both teams had just lost players to high school that week. November to these teams probably feels like an eternity. The Hornets are playing as well as anyone right now.  Edina > LVN.

Lakeville South v. MAML - YHH has seen both of these teams a few times this year. One of those times when they played each other in Eden Prairie, a game LVS won 5-0. The Cougars three line attack will be too much for the outmanned Moose. LVS > MAML.

Osseo Maple Grove v. Bloomington Jefferson - One of the best Friday matchups...OMG has a great resume and will test the Jags younger defensive corps.  Jefferson is a dangerous team when they get good goaltending and a few goals up front. This game will go down to the wire. Jefferson > OMG.

Semis

Stillwater > Edina

LVS > Jefferson

Finals

Stillwater > LVS

Play In

LVS > Edina, in what looks to be the best play-in game on Sunday...Lakeville South will end Edina's two year reign as Bantam state champs.

1 Seed = Stillwater

2 Seed = Lakeville South

Kyle Bouten and the Elks will take Cottage Grove by storm this weekend.

East Region (Cottage Grove)

Elk River v. Sibley - The Elks look to rebound after losing to Centennial in the District 10 Championship. Sibley is hoping to show the Elks that they are more than just happy to be at the party. Elk River > Sibley.

STMA v. Woodbury - Both teams have had some success, but both have struggled with consistency. YHH thinks Woodbury is playing better at this point of the year and will challenge the Knights deep into this game. STMA will prevail but it won't be easy. STMA > Woodbury.

Wayzata v. Eastview - Wayzata is playing their best hockey so far this year. They have three balanced lines and arguably the best goalie tandem in the state. That combination will be too much for the Lightning.  Wayzata > Eastview.

Minnetonka v. Burnsville - Minnetonka is the higher seed and likely has more talent than D6 rival Burnsville. But don't tell the Blaze they don't have a chance. They have beaten Tonka once and have several great wins this year (Anoka x2, St. Cloud, and Duluth East). Tonka will be too much for Burnsville and win it in the third. Tonka > Burnsville.

Semis

Elk River > STMA

Wayzata > Tonka

Finals

Elk River > Wayzata

Play In

Wayzata > Tonka, Wayzata will be too much for Skippers after Tonka has to fight through the likes of STMA or Burnsville in Loser's Bracket.

1 Seed = Elk River

2 Seed = Wayzata

The North Region better watch out for Micah Miller from Grand Rapids

North Region (Moorhead)

Two years ago, these Lemon Heads from Hermantown took Second in State, can they get past Grand Rapids and Hibbing this year?

Hermantown v. Brainerd - Hermantown came into the season with a top 5 ranking based on this group's state Runner Up finish as PeeWees.  As the season wore on the Hawks got better, not T10, but no doubt a threat to gain a berth to Rogers. Brainerd is a young team that will be a bonafide contender next season. Hermantown > Brainerd.

Grand Rapids v. Bemidji - Rapids is one of the best teams in Minnesota. They are a great combination of skill, speed and toughness. The Lumberjacks have had some success this year as well, having taken on just about any team within driving distance...this has the potential of being a surprise team on Sunday in Moorhead. Grand Rapids > Bemidji.

Moorhead v. Duluth East - These two teams have hovered just inside the T20 all year.  This should be a good game. Slight edge to the Hounds, it seems East is always clicking this time of year. Duluth East > Moorhead.

Roseau v. Hibbing - Hibbing is another of the great Northern teams this year. Having taken two metro swings and not lost, the Blue Jackets could punch their ticket to Rogers as early as Sunday am. Hibbing > Roseau.

Semis

Grand Rapids > Hermantown

Hibbing > Duluth East

Finals

Grand Rapids > Hibbing

Play In

Hibbing > Hermantown, this looks to be an epic game for the berth to the Cities. Anything can happen here. Both teams have great goaltending, snipers up front and future D1 players on the blue line. Had to pick one, we picked Hibbing.

Seed 1 = Grand Rapids

Seed 2 = Hibbing

Cade McEwen will need saves like these to get his team to State this year.
