Can Orono Make it to State like the High School Did?

It's Tourney Time

This Friday is no ordinary Friday for most hockey players in Bantams. It is do or die time. There will be 32 Bantam A teams starting off this weekend, and on Sunday night, only 8 teams will be left looking for a state championship trophy. Last year, the boys out of Mahtomedi took home the prize. This year, top contenders for the trophy will be Edina, Prior Lake, and Irondale/St. Francis. Each of the four regions will each send two teams to state, which means six teams will be going home from each region. Here are the predictions for the tournaments.

East Region (Cottage Grove)

Edina, after their win in Eden Prairie looks to be the team to beat in the East.

First Round Games:

Prior Lake > Farmington

Mankato > Apple Valley

Edina > Albert Lea

Northfield > Cottage Grove

PREDICTION: Edina, Mankato, and Prior Lake will be the top three teams. Farmington is also a good team so don't count them out. Northfield will get the win over Cottage Grove which will make Edina, Mankato, Prior Lake, and Northfield with one win. Edina will then play Northfield, and Prior Lake against Mankato. The Hornets from Edina and Mankato will both win their second games which will make for Edina versus Mankato in the championship. Edina will win the championship over Mankato which will mean Mankato will most likely play Prior Lake again for the #2 seed to state. That game will be a close one but Prior Lake will advance to state.

ADVANCED TO STATE: Edina and Prior Lake/Savage

North Region (Proctor)

First Round Games:

Tartan > North Shore

Hermantown > Virginia

Highland Central > Eveleth

Duluth East > Greenway

PREDICTIONS: Tartan will play Hermantown their second game. Tartan is a really good team and will be able to take down the Hawks. I predict Tartan beating Hermantown. Highland Central will face off vs Duluth East. Duluth East has beat some good teams this year. Highland Central won the Lake Superior Classic up in Duluth earlier this year. Highlan will defeat DE in a close battle. That leaves Tartan against Highland Central in the championship of the North Regional tourney. These two teams tied on January 21st, in a 2-2 battle. This time, Highland Central will win the game and take the first seed to state. The game for the second seed will be between Tartan and Duluth East. Tartan will be the stronger team and defeat Duluth East.

ADVANCE TO STATE: Highland Central and Tartan

South Region (Brooklyn Park)

Orono's Luke Renard will be a force this weekend for the Spartans.

First Round Games:

Wayzata > Marshall

Delano > L/D/C

Luverne > Hutchinson

Orono > Sartell

PREDICTIONS: Wayzata, Delano, Luverne, and Orono will all move on. Delano will play Wayzata. Both teams are really goo but Delano will beat them. Orono is a top team this year and they will defeat Luverne in a blow out. That leaves Orono vs Delano in the championship, which Orono will win. The second seed game will be  Wayzata vs Delano, which Delano will get the "w" and get the number two seed to the "big" tournament.

ADVANCE TO STATE: Orono and Delano/Crow River

East Grand Forks looks to punch a ticket to state

West Region (Moorhead)

First Round Games:

Alexandria > Warroad

Rogers > Detroit Lakes

East Grand Forks > Blaine

Irondale/St.Francis > Moorhead

PREDICTIONS: Alexandria has been playing great hockey, winning the D15 tournament. Rogers beat ISF in the championship of district in an OT game. East Grand Forks is an underrated team. They had a key win this season, including a win over Moorhead AA, and a tie with Rogers. Irondale/St.Francis is a falt out good team. They will be a team to watch in Moorhead this weekend. The second round will be Rogers over Alexandria and Irondale over EGF. That being said, the championship will be between ISF and Rogers, a rematch of the D10 championship. This time, Irondale/St. Francis will defeat Rogers. The second seed game will be Rogers vs EGF, which East Grand Forks will win the second seed.

ADVANCE TO STATE: Irondale/St. Francis and East Grand Forks
