Stillwater knocks off Elk River advances to State Final

Stillwater leads a contingent of District 2 teams into Championship Sunday

The Casey O'Briend armband

Saturday was a huge day for District 2 bragging rights and could have been even bigger with a little more puck luck in Bantam A. Stillwater beat Elk River advanced to the State Final as the Ponies try to capture their association's first state title. Highland Central won 6-1 over Delano to complete the Daily Double for the Capitals as their PeeWee A team won their Semi over Sartell 7-0. The Highland PWA's opponent? Mahtomedi (yes, from District 2 also). If it weren't for a bounce here or bounce there, Tartan could have been the Caps opponent in the Bantam A Final, but Wayzata beat them in a triple Overtime thriller. North St. Paul won over Wayzata Blue and advanced to the finals Sunday in Silver Bay. And to round out the magical run for District 2, the District Patriarch, White Bear Lake, stepped up and qualified for the PeeWee B State Title as well. The PWB Bears have been on a major role the last 30 days, winning eight straight playoff games including a 3-2 win over Minneapolis.  We expect a lot of hardware headed to the 651 later Sunday afternoon.

Highland Bantam A will be playing for teammate Casey O'Brien Sunday..Casey is a Cancer Survivor and has joined his team in Coon Rapids this weekend (they are wearing an armband to honor Casey this weekend).

Matthew Stanton with the GWG for the Ponies

Bantam AA (Game 1)

Max Michaelis scored for the Elks in the first period.

Stillwater > Elk River (3-1). The Ponies knocked off YHH choice to win the tournament. Matt Stanton scored late in the second period on a pretty DSC (Dangle, Snipe, Celly...maybe a bit too much on the Celly) and Noah Cates showed why he is one of the state's best when he scored on a scramble in front of the net in the third past a sprawling Ben Meyers. If the Ponies win today, this will be the first State Championship banner in Stillwater history.

Bantam AA (Game 2)

Jack Burnson stuffs home a goal for the ThunderHawks

Michah Miller, YHH Lotzza Motzza Player of the Game - he was awesome Saturday.

Grand Rapids > Edina (7-3). Edina, the winners of everything Bantam A the last two years came into the field this year an underdog. They knocked off #1 rated Eden Prairie Friday. And just like they did against the Eagles, they scored first. Lewis Crosby on a backhander in the middle of the first. From that point on it was all Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids' Drake Anderson scored on a knuckleball shot past Andrew Dietrich, it was tied 1-1 after 1.

Micah Miller was an absolute beast on Friday versus Woodbury, on Saturday he was even better. With Edina on the PowerPlay, Miller got loose and showed incredible speed and fired a laser bar down past a helpless Dietrich to give the ThunderHawks a 2-1 lead. A minute later on the same PowerPlay, Miller got loose again, this time on a 2-1 he slid it over to Blake McLaughlin for a pretty one time goal to make it 3-1. With each goal, came more momentum for Rapids, Jack Burnson score one of his two goals and the route was on. GR lead 5-1 after two and walked away with an impressive 7-3 win and a berth in the State Finals.

Sammy Walker scored late for the Hornets

Bantam A

Game 1: Wayzata > Tartan (3-2, 3OT). Wayzata's Tommy Leison scored on a breakaway to lift his team to the State Final over Tartan. An excting game that saw Wayzata fight back each time it was down. It was Leison's second GWG OT goal in as many days.

Game 2: Highland > Delano (6-1). The Caps came out flying after their win over Edina on Friday. Nick Auran and Johnny Gleason each had two goals. Jackson Jewett and Michael King each added a goal and Ray Christy had a pair of assists.

Highland after their 6-1 win over Delano on Saturday.

Bantam B

Game 1: North St. Paul > Wayzata Blue (3-1)

Game 2: Wayzata Navy > White Bear Lake (6-1)

Commentary: Navy goes for the Wayzata repeat in Bantam B. North St. Paul will be a tough team for the Trojans in Silver Bay on Sunday.

PeeWee AA

Game 1: Rochester > Sibley (3-1)

Game 2: Edina > OMG (6-3)

Commentary: Edina should win Sunday in TRF, but anything can happen in a tight game.

Mason Nevers scores for the Hornets

PeeWee A

Game 1: Highland > Sartell (7-0)...six different scorers for the Capitals, Robert Christy had 2...Matthew Gleason, Jack Nei, Robbie Klein, Adam Zukowski, Truman Stewart, and Jack Bloomquist all got on the score sheet.

Game 2: Mahtomedi > Armstrong Cooper (3-1)

Commentary: An all D2 final in PWA. The Caps have won all 3 meetings so far this year over the Zephyrs. Can they do it 4 times?

Robert Christy goes top shelf against Sartell in State Semifinals.

PeeWee B

Game 1: White Bear Lake > MPLS Purple (3-2)

Game 2: Edina White > Wayzata Gold (5-2)

Commentary: For the exception of Junior Gold, this Edina team is the only one in a state final. This should be a great game in Two Harbors.
