Grand Rapids Goalie Zach Stejskal Saves the Day for State Champ ThunderHawks

Grand Rapids players form a victory TeePee prior to the game near center ice vs. Stillwater.

Grand Rapids wins State Bantam AA Title

Rapids players celebrate after their first goal.

First Period: On a team with second year standouts like Micah Miller, John Stampohar, and Jack Burnson it is hard to stand out. Zach Stejskal did just that on Sunday afternoon in Rogers. In the first period, with the game scoreless, Stejskal made two acrobatic saves.  The kind that even the opposing cheers in acknowledgement. Late in the first Nathan Deguiseppi scored for the ThunderHawks to give them a 1-0 lead after 1. Stillwater carried the play, but could not solve number 30.

With what one might argue, the save of the Tournament by Zach Stejskal robbing Matthew Stanton of Stillwater in the first period.

Second Period: Early in the second, Connor Stefan got loose on the left wing and fired a wrist shot past Seth Eisele on the short side to give the ThunderHawks a 2-0 lead. On the next shift Matt Stanton scored for the Ponies to make it 2-1. The remainder of the second period was great back and forth action - both teams getting robbed left and right by Stejskal and Eisele. Late in the second, with Stillwater on the powerplay, Stillwater's Luke Manning scored to make it 2-2 with only 3 seconds left on the game clock. A huge lift for the Ponies headed into the second period intermission.

Third Period: Both teams came out flying in the third period. You could cut the tension with a knife on both sides of the cheering sections. What were loud and boisterous cheers in the first two periods were more half hearted and nervous cheers, the fans (and the players) knew what was on the line. Both goalies were on their game. With under six minutes to go, a Grand Rapids defenseman fired a low shot on net and Jack Burnson tipped it in to give the ThunderHawks a 3-2 lead.

With under three minutes to go, Grand Rapids got called for a penalty and Stillwater would esssentially play the rest of the game with a one man advantage, at least until they scored.

Grand Rapids did a great job of keeping Luke Manning and Company at bay. Stejskal would stand tall and the ThunderHawks would go on to win the MN Hockey State Championship 3-2 over Stillwater.
