Edina AA bench explodes after winning the State Peewee AA title

This post names the last twelve players in YHH's Top 50 for the 2013-2014 season.  All 50 players are to be congratulated.  Your play has been noticed in this corner of YHH.  Good luck from YHH as you play hockey in the future.  It is always fun to watch what happens over the next few years to these players.  There is one more post to go.  That post names the #1 player out of the 50 chosen thus far.  Good luck to all the peewee hockey players that played MN hockey this past season.  May the puck always go in the net and the goalies always put zeros on the scoreboards.

39. #39 Andover A-Alex Fuerst

Fuerst was the only goalie for the Andover A team.  Sometimes one just walks into an arena and is surprised.  At the Edina Invitational, that happened in the Hornets' West Arena in a peewee A game between Mankato A and Andover A.  Mankato's forwards were tough on the Andover defense and forced Fuerst to make good save after good save.  He played an exceptional game.  Andover A ended up in fourth place in District 10's peewee A league.  Most of the league games the Huskies played were one goal games.  In mid-January, they beat Anoka 3-2, St. Francis 6-5, and Spring Lake Park 4-1.  In the playoffs, Andover A was edged by Princeton 3-2 in the game for D10's #3 seed to the West Regional in Anoka.

Fuerst is a smaller goalie, but plays well, positions himself well, and stands up rushes.  He is a Top 50 pick this year.

40. #11 Roseville-Nik Norman

Roseville's Nik Norman (#11 white) takes the Alexandria player off the rush sending the puck wide of the Raider's goal

Roseville Association's peewee AA/A team has been a fixture in the Burnsville Thanksgiving Tourney for years and every year they have a good tourney.  Last Thanksgiving was no different as the Raiders beat Apple Valley, Cottage Grove, and Lakeville South, all District 8 teams, in pool play and went on to play in the championship round losing to Alexandria 2-1.  Norman was quickly penciled in as a potental Top 50.  With good reason, he scored 4 goals and posted 1 assist  in 6-2 over Lakeville South.

Norman has played on Roseville's peewee AA teams this past two seasons.  The Raiders had a good Big Pumpkin Tourney and won the Grand Rapids Tourney beating Woodbury in the championship game.  They beat out Highland A, White Bear Lake AA, and Mahtomedi A for the District 2 regular season title and beat White Bear Lake AA again in the playoffs for D2's regional seed.

Norman has good size and is a solid offensive player,  He works hard on the ice especially around the net and is a goal scorer.  Norman led the Raiders in scoring this season.  But the picture below shows Norman backchecking and stopping an Alexandria rush early in the season.  Norman can play defense.  He is a Top 50 this year.

41. #3 Alexandria-Caleb Strong

Strong often skated on the same line as Ben Doherty and Jack Westlind (two other Top 50 picks this year), but he demonstrated early in the season that he could carry a line by himself.  He is that good.  Strong overall plays smart hockey, often beating bigger defensemen with his inner skills positioning his body to protect the puck or moving to an open area to gain an edge on a cut to the net.

In the Cardinals' state tourney consolation semifinal win 6-3 over Farmington, Strong posted four points (one goal and three assists).  In Alexandria's consolation championship win over Edina A 2-1, Strong's assist set up the tying goal in the third period.  Assists usually go to the hardest working forwards in the corners and behind the net.  Strong is a hard working forward.

42. #4 Edina AA Jett Jungels

Jett has skated the past two years for the Edina AA team and has shown over and over again, the knack to be in the right place at the right time.  He was good last year and has gotten better playing an extremely aggressively for the Hornets.  He has grown this season and uses his added size to play physical especially around the net.

Jungels skated most often with Ben Brinkman and Jack Jensen.  The three formed a one-two punch for the Hornets opponents with Grant Sillanoff and Liam Malmquist's line.  All five have been two year starters for the once beaten Edina AA team.  Good skater and a good stick handler, Jungels is a fun player to watch.

43. #18 Moorhead-Ethan Firsch

Ethan Firsch just stands out on the ice.  A bigger player, he is a strong, smooth skater with a hard shot.  At the Cloquet Barner, Moorhead could not get by the Rochester Red in the semifinals and ended up beating Buffalo to take third place.

In the North Regional played in Grand Rapids, the Spuds beat Hermantown 3-2 and Duluth East 5-4 to get to the North championship game only to lose to Cloquet 4-0.  Later that Sunday, they ended up losing again, 4-1 to Hermantown to end their season.  The Spuds won Distrtict 15's peewee AA regular season (two games) and played an independent schedule often playing teams from North Dakota.

Frisch is one of the big reasons why the Spuds had a successful season.  He has that instinct to create space on the ice to put his hard shot on the net.

44. #7 Edina A-Peter Engelking

Edina A's Peter Engelking ends up taking this low left crease shot in an early season game. Engelking, a two year peewee player for Edina A, ends his season as a Top 50 pick.

Each year, more than a few years ago, this corner of YHH would form a summer team that played in the leagues around town.  It was a fun thing, more like going to an outdoor rink and choosing sides with refs and a scoreboard.  One player that was always on the team came from Northfield and almost all the players called him "the Northfield kid".  They all wanted him on the team.  He wasn't the best skater, he wasn't the best shot, and at times he would get caught out of the play.

All he did was score or set up his teammates to score.  On the bench then (a long time ago), the most common words were "the Northfield Kid scored again".  That is what Peter Engelking has done for the Edina A team this year.  Only he is a far better skater.  Teamed with Brette Chorske, Engelking would be on the ice in critical situations and he would often deliver for the Hornets.  Engleking has a good game awareness, a quick shot, and knows how to play the game.  A second year player on the Edina A team, Engelking is a Top 50 player this year.

45. #14 Osseo/Maple Grove-Trevor Kukkonen

Kukkonen was sort of the anti-Trevor Janicke on the Osseo/Maple Grove team.  Janicke was the high octane player that tended to be everywhere, Kukkonen tended to be the "mop up" guy often coming in late to due the damage.  And the damage he did often killed opponent's hope of victory.  In two seperate games that YHH saw him play, his team won both times.  Of the twelve goals the Crimson scored in those two games, Kukkonen scored six and had three assists.

A lankier player with a long hard shot, Kukkonen is accurate.  Most of his shots were on goal this past season.  A good skater with nice physical size, he can play the body well and is not afraid to be physical.  If he is being played physical, he will up his physical play but always seemed to remain "cool".  That is why he is a Top 50 pick.

Osseo/Maple Groves' Trevor Kukkonen watches this shot headed for the net (puck can be seen on the fly just above the goalie's stick).

46. #13 Sibley-Danny Magnuson

Magnuson played defense and sometime offense for the Warriors this past season.  He is a big rangy player that can cover a lot of ice.  A good skater with a hard shot from the point, Magnuson played a solid game at defense.  More importantly, he has a knack for picking his spots and rushing the puck.  Often his rushes turned into solos when he beat the opponents defense one-on-one by cutting inside to the net, initiating contact, and driving forward slipping past the defense for a clear shot on the net.

Sibley had a good 2012-2013 season with Magnuson playing defense; they had a better 2013-2014 season inpart due to Magnuson play at the defense.  A solid player, it will be interesting to watch him progress.

47. #11 Prior Lake-Charlie Kashmark

Prior Lake's Charlie Kashmark puts the puck in the back of the net against Cloquet at the Peewee AA State Tourney in Thief River Falls.

One of the first games of the 2013-2014 season was an October scrimmage between Prior Lake and Lakeville South played at Ames Arena.  South was in the middle of tryouts and the Lakers had just formed their team.  Score was not kept, but surprisingly the Lakers were winning.  They continued to win and later that season a common reaction to fans seeing Prior Lake play the first time is that the Lakers were small as team.  At YHH they were good as a team and quickly established themselves as one of the top teams in the state.

Kashmark was instrumental in helping  the Lakers win.  He has a good shot, skates well, and has that instinct to be around the puck.  Prior Lake continued to win and had a great finish to the regular season.  They were seeded into the South Regional.  After losing to Wayzata in the semifinals, the Lakers stormed back to beat Wayzata 4-3 in triple overtime to advance to the state tourney.  At state, the Lakers lost a tough opening game to Sibley 2-1 but came back to take the Consolation Championship beating District 6 rival Minnetonka.

Kashmark had a great state tourney playing aggressively around the opponent's net.  He has very quick reactions.  A good player on a team of good players, it will be interesting to see how they play as bantams in two years.

Prior Lake's Charlie Kashmark looks back at his shot hitting the Cloquet goalie's stick on this scoring attempt at state.

48. #12 Edina AA-Jack Jensen

Edina AA's Jack Jensen boxed out the opponent never turning his back and refusing to let the opponent drive him out of position on this play.

If you want to date yourself and call yourself a Beatle's fan; people remember the Fab Four by their personalities.  John was controversial, Paul was the heartthrob of all the girls, Ringo was sort of the crazy drummer, and George just played the guitar and sang.  If you have been reading the Top 50, you might have noticed all five returning Edina AA peewee players have been picked.  They deserve to be after posting only one loss and one tie in over 100 games played over the two seasons.

They are Fab Five this year.  Don't know what their persionalities are off the ice, but on the ice Jensen is like George, the others get the attention and he just plays the game and scores.  A bigger forward, he is just strong in his skates.  As shown in the picture below, he has boxed out the defense and keeping the ice open looking for the rebound on the incoming shot.   A strong skater, Jensen has one of the hardest shots at the peewee level in the state.

49. #5 Sibley-Luke Williams

Sibley's Luke Williams (far right) leaps after realizing his has just scored in the Warrior's state semifinal game against Rochester Red.

The Sibley Warriors have put together two good seasons in a row and returned

Williams is a hard working forward for Sibley's peewee team that often was in the middle of the action on Sibley scoring plays.  He tended to move from line to line as needed during a game.  He also tended to score in critical situations.  A good skater and quick shot, he plays the corners well in the offensive zone.

Sibley had six players returning from last year's peewee A team that couldn't beat Edina A in the East Regionals played at Wakota Arena in South St. Paul losing twice to the Hornets.  This season, playing in the AA state tourney, Sibley couldn't get by Rochester in the semifinals and ended up taking third place.  Williams did not play on last year's team and could be a first year player.  If so, he will be back.

Always a hard worker around the net, Sibley's Luke Williams (#5) sticks his head out from between two Osseo/Maple Grove defensemen at the state tourney.

50. #12 Rosemount-Jackson Sabo

Jackson Sabo plays a strong forward for the Irish.  He always seems to be in the center of the play and fits well with his teammates.  An overall good hockey player, he always seemed to be picking up the puck at the right point and making the right play.  Most often the play ended up with Sabo scoring, often coming back into the play after setting up a teammate for the inital shot.

The Irish had a good season, but an up and down one.  With Sabo on the ice, the Irish had more ups than downs.
