Holy Family's Dayton Rasmussen holds down the fort for Section 6

Bantam Player of the Year Finalist, Casey Mittelstadt, scores late for Section 6 to cut the Section 2 lead to 2-1.

The 2014 Reebok Minnesota Hockey High Performance Program entered it's next phase this weekend in Plymouth. Phase I was the tryout process. Phase II is this weekend's festival. Fifty-Four players will be selected after this weekend to participate in the Final 54 CCM NIT. Twenty Players from that event will be selected based on performance to participate in the USA Hockey Boys 16/17 Player Development Camps in New York later in the Summer.

Section 6 wins 3-2 thriller over Section 2

Nick Althaus from St. Cloud Apollo makes a big save for Section 6.

In the HP 16 games, they play two 24 minute halves. The first half was a great display of some individual talent at all three positions. Goaltenders Sean Daley (Holy Angels) and Nick Althaus (St. Cloud Apollo) turned away every shot except one. State champion forwards Kieffer Bellows and Garrett Wait showed why Edina was so dominant in the State Tourney, and Defensemen Tristan Moss and Myles Cunningham showed great skill for their teams on the blue line.

Late in the first, Cunningham picked up a loose puck near the point and fired a wrist shot toward a screened Althaus into the upper corner for a 1-0 lead for Section 2.

Second Half, 3 late goals lift Section 6 to HP Finals

Holy Family's Dayton Rasmussen comes up big on a Penalty Shot by Eric Worre.

In the second half, Dayton Rasmussen (G, Holy Family) showed why many believe he is the best '98 Goalie in Minnesota. Section 2 dominated play for almost the entire game, frustrating Section 6 with a great forecheck and getting chance after chance on Althaus and Rasmussen. In the second half, Rasmussen robbed several S2 players including Jake Theis on a Penalty Shot to keep the score 1-0 (note: a Penalty Shot is rewarded in lieu of 2 minute Penalties.

S2 continued to pressure S6. Prior Lake Defenseman Matt Denman made a great play jumping the play holding the puck and freezing Rasmussen and eventually sliding the puck through the crease where Delanon's Ben Meyers stuffed it home in a scrum. Section 2 was in complete control until late in the period, Bantam Player of the Year Finalist, Casey Mittelstadt got loose in the Section 2 slot. He quickly turned around and fired a bullet past Burnsville Goalie Joshua Kenney to cut the Section 2 lead to 2-1.

With under a minute to go, Section 2 was called for a penalty. Wayzata's Tristan Moss took the penalty shot for Section 6. Moss came in on Kenney with a head of steam and faked to the forehand and at the last second went to the back hand and tied it for Section 6.

Overtime

Wayzata Forward Luke Paterson with the GWG for Section 6.

In the extra session, they went to a four on four format...opening up the game and the scoring chances. Early in OT, Rasmussen came up big on two separate S2 chances. In transition, Wayzata's Luke Paterson got loose and in a flash made a great move on Kenney and won the game for Section 6. Section 6 scored three goals in 5 plus minutes and advanced to the finals of the HP 16 Spring Festival.
