Great early season battle between the top 2 Minnesota AAA teams.

Editor's Note: The game had no score sheet kept, nor do either teams have names on the back of their sweaters.

Historically the two top off-season AAA teams are the Minnesota Blades and the Minnesota Machine (Orange). In the 2001 birthyear this couldn't be more true. Within this class of Minnesotan's there are some other really nice players that don't play for the Blades and Machine, but when these two teams match up, it is some great and intense hockey.

Three reasons why.

1. Coaches: the coaches are outstanding and kids want to play for them. The Machine is lead by Chris LaCombe, a well known coach at several levels including many of the great Eden Prairie youth teams over the past two decades. The Blades are coached by former Gopher and NHL star Lance Pitlick. Pitlick has coached in the Wayzata system as well the Blades for years.

2. Familiar: besides playing against one another in many big tournaments for five plus years, several of these kids have been members of the opposite team at one

3. Bragging Rights: being the top two AAA organizations brings some pride in who you represent. Any time the Blades and Machine get tangled up, an unbiased fan sees some good hockey and intensity you rarely see in off-season hockey.

First Period

Killian Kiecker-Olson scores the first of his three goals for the Machine Orange.

The game got off to a quick start with both teams having scoring chances in the first two shifts. Jake Hale got the scoring started for the Blades when he used his speed to get loose for a breakaway. He made a great move faking to his backhand and then to his forehand to score a minute and half into the game to give the Blades a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Prior Lake's Jackson Jutting got a great pass from Nathan Warner who buried it to give the Blades a 2-0 lead. Probably the prettiest goal of the game came a minute later when Kaden Bohlsen used a burst of speed to get by an Orange defender and made a sweet head fake on the Orange Goalie and finished it to give the Blades a commanding 3-0 lead. With a little over two minutes to go in the first, the Orange got into the act when Killian Kiecker-Olson finished off a pretty 3 on 1 break...Michael Shoemaker fed a pass to Keegan Langfels who slid it to Olsen for a one-timer  to narrow the Blades lead to 3-1. Thirty seconds later the Orange took a penalty and the Blades converted a face off play when Nathan Warner shoveled in a goal to give the Blades a 4-1 lead at the break.

Second Period

Machine's Jackson LaCombe scores in the second to narrow the Blades lead to 4-3.

The second period showed a slight shift in momentum. The Orange began to control play. Two minutes into the period on the power play, Killian Kiecker-Olson scored on a tip in for his second of the game to cut the lead to 4-2. With that goal, the Machine began to pick up steam. After some great body contact in fron of the net, Jackson LaCombe got a loose puck and beat Blades goalie Ben Fritsinger to his glove side to make it 4-3.

The composure of the game from that point on went from "nice early season friendly" to "game on". The contact picked up and battles for loose pucks began to intensify.

With 5:41 left in the second, Kaden Bohlsen won a puck battle and gained control in space. With a defender on him, he quickly fired a shot to the short side high. The Orange goaltender expecting a low shot went down as the puck went up off the back crossbar for a 5-3 Blades lead.  The period ended with the Blades leading by 2.

Kaden Bohlsen goes top shelf for the Blades to give them a 5-3 lead in the second period.

Third Period

Killian Kiecker-Olson nets the Hat Trick for the Machine.

Early in the third, Kiecker-Olson completed the hat trick when he got a puck in space point blank on Fritsinger. He fired a wrist shot past the Andover stand out to cut the lead to 5-4. With 15 minutes to go..it was anyone's game.

The physical play got even more physical. The Machine tried to impose their will on the Blades and the Blades wanted nothing to do with stepping down to their rival. The makings of a great finish.

With 11 minutes to go, Chaska Chan's Joe Simpson made a great stretch pass to Jake Hale who took the puck in all alone and he made a similar move to the one that worked in the first and scored to give the Blades a 6-4 lead.

Both teams had their chances in the second half of the third period but both goalies, Lakeville's Will Johnson from the Orange and Fritsinger from the Blades were equal to the task. Down two late, the Orange tried pulling their goalie in hopes of getting added pressure. Neither team really threatened in those final moments. The final score was 6-4.

Blades star Kaden Bohlsen with 2 Goals was our Lotzza Motzza Player of the Game.
