Orange and Red play great low scoring game

Last Summer, the '02 Machine Orange took out the '02 Euro American Red in the Caribou Cup Championship game. The Orange were just a little too much for the Red that day. It was one of the better games we saw at the Caribou Cup last Summer.

Fast forward to this Spring. Both teams rosters changed a little bit, the Red has added a few new players and the Orange just one. But for the most part, this game was a rematch of last Summer's game. Earlier in the tournament, the Euros took out the Orange 4-1 to gain the higher seed into Bracket play. But Sunday's game was for first place and some bragging rights heading into the Spring/Summer.

The Goalies

Three Goalies played on Sunday. Zach Dosan (Jefferson Squirt) played the entire game for the Red and Basil Kamsheh (Jefferson PeeWee) and Zach Wiese (Owatonna PeeWee) split time for the Orange. All three played really well when tested.

The Euro Red celebrate their goal by Justin Janicke early in the Second period.

During the scoreless first period, each team had their chances. Orange Goalie Basil Kamsheh had a few really pretty point blank saves for the Machine. Zach Dosan faced 11 shots in the first and was rock solid as the teams headed into the Zamboni intermission.

Justin Janicke got the scoring started for the Red when Brock Faber slid a long stretch pass to Janicke who held the puck long enough to freeze Kamsheh and beat him with a wrist shot low glove side.  That gave the Red the lead for almost the entire second period. With just over a minute to go in the second Jackson Hallum beat Dosan on the short side to tie the score. Both goals in the period were not pretty...one's the goalies most assuredly would like back.

The game was very clean..very few whistles..a few penalties, but called evenly both ways. Each team had a few chances, but none of the spectacular kind (breakaways, 2 on 1's, back door open netters). Credit to both defensive corps on both teams. Minnetonka's Will Konen and Blaine's Mason Streeter were impressive for the Orange and Elk River's Jack Ferry and Connor Kelley from OMG were impressive for the Red.

The third period was more of the same...very tight defensive battle, but very fast paced. Each team had a power play, but each were unable to produce a GWG. As the period wore on, the fans (and likely the players, too) knew that if a goal was scored, that it would likely be the Game Winner. The game indeed ended in a tie. During the four on four extra session, both teams had some great chances, but each goalie (Dosan/Red and Wiese/Orange) came up big.

It is never fun to decide a game in a shootout, but as tournaments go...it can be the only way to stay within the time limits of a rink. Each team had five chances to score.

Euro had two scorers: Brock Faber (OMG) and Connor Kelley

Orange had three: Blake Mesenburg (Orono), Tristan Broz (Jefferson), and Jackson Hallum (Eagan)

Jack Smith had a chance to tie it for the Red but Wiese made a great leg pad save to preserve the win for the Orange.
