Three Seeding Games in Cloquet Heading into Spring Festival

As the state's best 15 year olds square off all over Minnesota this week, YHH covered the progress of the Reebok High Performance Phase 3. This week the 15's played seeding games all over Minnesota in 4 separate sections. The sections were divided somewhat by region of the state: South (4,8, and 9), North (11, 12, and 16), East (2, 3, and 6) and West (5, 10, and 15).

Exact results from these seeding games are not exactly clear. Here is what we do know:

East: District 6 won both of it's games, 4-2 over District 3 and 7-1 over District 2 giving them the high seed.

West: District 5 and District 15 tied 4-4, District 10 beat District 15, 6-2 and D5 vs. D10 played to a 2-2 tie. This gives D10 the #1 seed.

North: D11 beat D16 Friday 3-2 and then beat D12 on Saturday to take the #1 seed (see recap below), D16 knocked off D12 to nab the #2.

South: No scores reported..but it doesn't take a genius to annoint D8 as the #1 out of the South. Scott Reedy, Austin Pratt and Ryan Poehling is lethal combination for District 8.

Game 1: District 11 vs. District 16

The North kicked off their 3 games Friday night when District 16 took on District 11 in Cloquet. Many of these players sparked and caught our eyes and they will be listed at the bottom. One of the games featured two very skilled districts, which have great associations. District 11 has players from Duluth, Hermantown, Cloquet, Silver Bay and a couple other hockey communities. District 16 has players from Roseau, Bemidji, East Grand Forks, Warroad, and a couple other also.

HALF 1

Goal by D11 scored by Tanner Ketola, came down the right side of Noah Harren, cut to the middle at the top of the slot and shot backhand top shelf.

Goal by D16 scored by Dylan Selk (EGF), assist by Brady Anderson (TRF): Anderson drove down low and circled around the net, Cade McEwen slid over to his left post, Anderson passed it in front of McEwen and Selk tapped the puck over McEwens pad.

Goal by D16 scored Ethan Pickett (Bemidji), assist to Zach Lee (TRF): Lee takes a shot from the point, rebound comes right to Pickett on the backdoor and he buries it to make it 2-1 in favor of D16.

HALF 2

Goal by D11 scored by Chad Nordeen (Two Harbors), unassisted. Nordeen worked it in the corner, walked right to the blocker side of Fitzgerald, shot it just over the shoulder of Fitzgerald.

Goal by D11 scored by Blake Bergquist. He came over the blue-line on a one on one and shot it through the defenders legs and went right over Matt Fitzgerald's glove to make it 3-2 with only 1:17 seconds left in the game.

FINAL SCORE: 3-2 in favor of District 11.

D16 PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Max Marvin (Warroad): This player knows how to dangle. He has great awareness and knows the game of hockey well.

Robert Astrup (Warroad): He has a cannon of a shot. He also blocks shots for his teammates.

Dylan Selk (EGF): He has very good speed that he uses well.

Alex Verbout (Roseau): Alex is a big player, and he uses his size wisely. He makes the hits that he needs to to help boost his team.

D11 PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Tyler Watkins (Hermantown): This kid has so much skill. He knows where to be to make something happen. He will make some noise down in Edina.

Luke LaMaster (Duluth East): Luke is a big player that has a missle of a shot. He also back checks really good.

Cade McEwen (Hermantown): Cade is a quick and aggresive goaltender. He also isn't afraid to play the puck up the ice.

Games 2 and 3: Saturday

Game 2 - D16 vs. D12: Josh Baker from Bemidji got the scoring started for D16. Ryker Brazerol from Grand Rapids scored on a scrum out in front to tie for D12. It was 1-1 after the first half. In the second half, District 16 applied more and more pressure on D12. Casey Kallok fom East Grand Forks (not Thief River as reported on Twitter) got loose on a breakaway and beat the D12 goalie on a backhander to give 16 a 2-1 lead. Late in the second half, Steven Johannes scored from the point to give D16 a 3-1 lead. D12 pulled their Goalie late but neither teams was able to capitalize. Final score 3-1, D16 over D12.

Game 3 - D12 vs. D11: The second game was one team fighting for the #1 seed (District 11) and another hoping to avoid the #3 seed (District 12). District 11 controlled the play but could not get the puck past D12 Goalie Christian Renskers (Hibbing) until the 17 minute mark of the first half. D11 got goals from Tanner Ketola (Silver Bay) and Luke LaMaster (Duluth East) a minute apart to give D11 a 2-0 lead at the break.

The scoring opened up quite a bit in the second half. Ryan Sandelin (Hermantown) scored on a pass from Ryan Nelson (Cloquet) to make it 3-0. D12 got on the board when Max Roberts (Eveleth) scored to make it 3-1. With the D12 gaining momentum, Tanner Ketola scored again to give D11 some insurance at 4-1. Hermantown's Dylan Samberg got in on the act for D11 and scored to make it 5-1 for D11. Another Duluth player got on the score sheet when Reid Hill scored on a nice pass from Sandelin to make it 6-1. Late in the game, Josh Carlson (Grand Rapids) scored on a pass from Jack Burnson (Grand Rapids) to round out the scoring. Final score from Cloquet, D11 6 and D12 2.

D12 PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Jack Burnson (Grand Rapids): speedy forward, can play either Center or Wing. Has a great nose for the puck, but moves the puck to teammates as well as anyone.

Dylan Carlson (Greenway): strong skater, very strong on his edges...has a very high hockey IQ. Rugged two way player.
