A Great List of Players Headed off to St. Cloud in June...and 5 that got away.

HP 15: 102 players selected for next phase

After two phases of the Reebok HP 15 process there were 240 players headed into the Spring Festival. The 12 teams played 3 games each this past weekend. A group of Coaches, General Managers, and Player Evaluators had the unenviable job of selecting 102 players for the next phase - the Summer Camp in St. Cloud.  Twenty players from that camp eventually are selected and will be headed to New York for a USA Hockey National camp in July.

Of the 102 selected, 20 were 8th Graders last year...the rest 9th Graders. The Selection Committee did a nice job of selecting the top players and balancing in players from all over Minnesota. They took big kids, small kids, fast kids, northern kids, southern kids, private school, prep school and everything in between. The list is a great cross section of talent for the "Final 20" Evaluators to observe in St. Cloud. The following is the list as published by MN Hockey Yesterday and our Commentary.

Commentary

YHH published a list of who we thought were the 102 best players we saw during this process on Monday.  Here is a link to the Premium story we published prior to MN Hockey announcing. During the first three phases of the process, we saw Phase 2 scrimmages, Seeding Games in the Metro and Cloquet, and all 18 games of the Spring Festival. Prior to the process we have seen these players play hundreds of games over the course of their career, both in the regular season and off-season.

Our list and the Committee's list were very close. We agreed on 38 of the 54 Forwards, 28 of the 36 Defensemen and six of the 12 Goalies. As we've stated throughout this process, there are 70 kids that really stand out, the final 30 selections will be difficult for any great hockey mind.

5 That Got Away

Here are 5 kids we had in our "70 that stood out" type of player.

FORWARDS:

1. Robert Lescarbeau (Bloomington Jefferson) - quick multipurpose forward...can play all 3 positions, had a lot of points during the Festival.

2. Mitch Machlitt (Breck) - big and fast skater who controlled the play when he took the ice for District 3. In one game we broadcasted, he was our player of the game.

3. Dominic Picciano (Minnetonka) - aggressive player with a great extra gear...showed promise all season. Seemed to get better every time we watched him this year.

DEFENSEMEN:

We agreed on such a high percentage (28/36) of the Defensemen, we could hardly disagree with any of their picks here.

GOALIES:

4. Zachariah Harding (Red Wing) - was arguably the third best Goalie in the festival behind Robbel and Stauber. Harding played good angles, was confident with the puck and showed amazing athleticism.

5. Cade McEwen (Hermantown) - another great Goalie that was one of the best Bantam Goalies in Minnesota this year. He had a good Festival, his team District 11 had a tough schedule (2 Saturday games against District 8 and District 6).
