Off-season AAA hockey has many imperfections. With so many teams and single age levels, a big challenge is finding a good game locally. At the '00 level, many of the Elite players line up for the Machine Orange. There are a few other teams that can be considered the #2 team in MN. Two of them are the MN Blades and the Euro American Red.

YHH took in a Stars and Stripes pool play game between the Blades and the Reds Friday. The Blades have new newcomers Nate Bordson (Eastview) and Colin Schmidt (Wayzata) to go with star Forward K'Andre Miller (Minnetonka). The EuroRed team, the winners of the Caribou Cup last summer return most of their team. The Reds are a very big team and very skilled.

1st Period

The first period was a matchup of each team's size and speed. The Reds had two goals, one by Elk River's Connor Bizal and the other by St. Michael Albertville's Zach Sjelin. They took a 2-0 lead into the Zamboni break.

Second Period

Colin Schmidt celebrates after his game tying slap shot.

In the middle of the second period, K'Andre Miller got the Blades on the board after a Euro turnover in their own zone. Until this goal, the Reds had more scoring chances and control of the game. The Miller goal seemed to ignite the Blades. Until that goal, the maroon and black had only one goal against the Reds in 4+ periods (they lost 5-1 earlier in the Spring). Minutes later, Colin Schmidt got loose in the high slot and let go his patented slap shot and beat Euro American Goalie Brennan Boyton over the right shoulder to tie it 2-2.

Third Period

Nate Bordson celebrates his GWG with his Blades teammates.

The third period was a staring match. Both teams played really well, with a slight advantage in play held by the Blades. The Blades were playing more like the Reds, winning battles to loose pucks and using their body very well. Each team had a couple great chances. Both goalies Ben Beattie (Blades/Eastview) and Brennan Boynton (Red/Champlin) played outstanding. With 20 minute periods, these Goalies saw more rubber than the Indianopolis Speedway.

With a few minutes left in the game, K'Andre Miller (Minnetonka) made a great pass to linemate Nate Bordson and he fired a low shot past Boynton for the win. The Blades held on to win 3-2.
