'13 Champs Elk River set to return, plus 15 more vie for traveling trophy

Sixteen teams from all over Minnesota have accepted invitations to play in arguably the best early season Bantam AA tournament in the state. The Battle for the Blue Ox, in it's second year has attracted what are likely 16 of the top Bantam AA teams in the state. Last year's field had State Champion Grand Rapids, third place Edina, fourth place Elk River and Consolation Champion Eden Prairie and Consolation Runner Up Hermantown.

The field this year will feature four powerhouses at this age level: Edina, Minnetonka, St. Michael Albertville, and Grand Rapids. All four teams when formed come November will be teams with deep talent pools rich in talent.

The talent at this age of Bantams is very high. Top Bantam teams from associations like Wayzata (State Runner up at PeeWee AA 2 years ago), Lakeville South, Elk River, and Osseo Maple Grove will make their way north to win the the blue statue.

Teams to Watch

Besides the Big 4 (Edina, Minnetonka, STMA and Grand Rapids)....here are a few teams that could make some noise in Brainerd:

Brainerd: last year the host team was a very hospitable team to their guests, this year they return a nice corps of players plus a nice group of second year PeeWees will make the Warriors a tough team to beat on their home ice.

Eastview: two year's ago, this group of PeeWees had a nice regular season run but ran into an incredibly tough East Region that produced the State Champion (Edina) and State Consolation Champion (Minnetonka). The Lightning have a nice crop of returning players from both their AA and B teams and one or two first years that will make them scary come November.

Osseo Maple Grove: a very talented association with several great returning players coupled with first year Bantams who finished their PeeWee careers in the state tournament.

Wayzata: a very strong team two years ago as PeeWees (second in state to Edina) with several players that have really started to shine in the last few months (Griffin Ness, Grant Anderson, Tyler Dingmann, and Colin Schmidt)...this team could make a lot of noise.
