The State's Best Second Year Bantams cross enemy lines and play with one another

The Minnesota Bantam Elite League kicks off it's games Saturday in Woodbury. Last weekend four of the five teams held a mini training camp at Braemar Arena. YHH had a chance to take in their practices and scrimmages. The League is set up for top end players from all over Minnesota (5 Metro Teams and 1 North team) to play with and against one another. Some for the first time and some that have played together forever.

All Star formatted events are great venues to see top players compete against top players. Watching these players who have been played for rival association and AAA teams play together was a treat. Cats and Dogs playing together against other Cats and Dogs can be quite entertaining for a local bystander.

Teams

Blackhawks - Coached by Brian Murphy (Minnetonka Bantam AA Coach), the Hawks have Peter Tabor (Edina), Hayden Brickner (Centennial), and Griffin Ness (Wayzata) on their roster. While playing versus the Red Wings, they seemed to have the upper hand while playing 4 on 4 for an hour. Keegan Karki (St. Cloud) looks to be a great goalie and will be paired with Jacob Sibell (Cambridge) as one of the stronger Goalie pairings in this group.

Bruins - The Bruins are lead by Scott Bond (Minnesota Made) and Eric McCabe. McCabe's son Devlin (St. Paul Academy), Brady Ziemer (Hutchinson), and Ryan Elder (Minnetonka) are a few of the great players playing for the B's this Summer. Watch out for Peyton Matsui from Farmington...he's a proven goal scorer. The Bruins will be one of the more well balanced teams in the League.

Canadiens - Lead by Minnetonka Bantam Co-Coach Avi Friedman, the Canadiens look to be the biggest and potentially most physical teams in the League. They are more than just big though. The Habs are very deep talent-wis as well. K'Andre Miller (Minnetonka), Luke Mountain (Shattuck St. Mary's) and Zach Sjelin (STMA) are just a few of the big and skill that will wear the red, white and gray. At first glance, YHH thinks the Canadiens could be the best team in the BEL.

Maple Leafs - The Leafs are coached by Brian DeWees (coached Farmington PeeWee A last year). Austin Pratt (Shattuck St. Mary's), Jack Olsen (Lakeville South), and Zach Bauer (Farmington) represent the Leafs. YHH did not see the Leafs practice...but their team will be ready when they take on Bruins, Canadiens and Red Wings this weekend.

Rangers - The North team aptly named "The Rangers" looks to be one of the strongest teams in the league. Luke LaMaster (Duluth), Gavin Hoen (Grand Rapids) and Chase Hartje (Bemidji) are all very gifted players. YHH Goalie of the Year, Zach Stejskal will don the the Rangers uni along with Moorhead's Carter Krier forming the tallest and shortest Goalie tandem in the league. These two netminders are very athletic and can win games for their team. The Rangers are coached by Brad Clayton.

Red Wings - Coached by Danny Vranek (Eden Prairie)...the Wings trot out Jaxon Nelson (Luverne), Ryan Lesko (Eden Prairie) and Ben Almquist (Holy Family). They will be an entertaining team to watch with several kids that had major success last season at the High School and Bantam level. Ben Beattie (Apple Valley/Eastview) and Nick Konkel (White Bear Lake) make up a great pair of goalies for the Wings.

Players to Watch

Sunday Standouts

Griffin Ness, Wayzata - the player that stood out most on Sunday. Fast, skilled and great finisher (note: they played 4 v. 4 versus the Wings).

Devline McCabe, SPA - great hands and a very hard worker.

K'Andre Miller, Minnetonka - played forward and was an absolute beast to contain in the offensive zone.

Sleepers

Colin Schmidt, Wayzata - strong kid that is dangerous below the hash marks.

Max Eilefson, Irondale - Goalie that posesses good footwork and solid mechanics. Had a solid outing versus the Bruins Sunday.

Andrew Urban, Wayzata - smart player whose skill is catching up with his body. Gave defenders trouble on just about every shift vs. B's.
