Cloquet's Brendan Durand scores for the North

Joey Petronack with a clap bomb

The northern team, Rangers, came to Bloomington Saturday and played two great games, both to a tie. In both games they gave up a lead. The talent on the Rangers was admired by all metro onlookers. Speedsters Tyler Watkins and Alex Verbout were very impressive up front for the Rangers, as were defensemen Luke LaMaster and Chase Hartje.

Five games total...including the Blackhawks first win and the Red Wings first loss. Some teams faced each other for the second time and some nice rivalries are forming and the teams began to show signs of cohesion physically and bonding emotionally.

Morning Game: Wings over Leafs 7-1

Jacob Erickson from MPLS scores for the Wings Saturday.

Wings knock off Leafs 7-1 in convincing fashion. The Wings beat the Leafs last Sunday and faced them again Saturday on the Olympic sheet at Bloomington Ice Garden. Jacob Erickson lit the lamp for the Wings on a loose puck in front on the Wings PP. Joey Pertronack added two goals -- the White Bear D Man had a great game for the Reds. They lead 3-0 after the first half and scored 5 Special Teams goals (4 PP and 1 SH) beating the powerful Leafs 7-1.

The Goalie tandem of Ben Beattie and Nick Konkel saved 22 of 23 shots for the winnners.

Morning Game: Bruins over Hawks 3-2

St. Paul's Andy Beran with a big save Saturday

The Bruins won their third close game defeating the Blackhawks 3-2 on Saturday. After trailing 1-0 after the break they score three unanswered goals and then held off the Hawks at the end to get their record to 3-1 on the season.

Placing a high emphasis on defense and goaltending Coach Scott Bond has found a winning formula so far for the Bruins.

The Hawks scored first when Wayzata Power Forward Colin Schmidt stuffed in a Lewis Crosby pass to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead after 1. In the second half, the Bruins would step up their game and add serious pressure to the Hawks, scoring two goals in the first eight minutes to take the lead on goals by Jake Leonard and Austin Carroll. Matthew Koethe beat Keegan Karki on the short side to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead in the middle of the half. A minute later, Schmidt would add his second goal of the game to cut the B's lead to 3-2. STMA's Todd Scott would close the door after that for the Bruins in goal to seal the win for the Bruins, 3-2.

Afternoon Game: Rangers and Canadiens skate to 5-5 tie

Elk River's Connor Bizal scores GTG for the Canadiens

It was the first game for the Rangers and no one including Rangers coaches Roger Mischke and Brian Hartje knew what the team would do against the teams from the Metro. Twenty-nine seconds in, the Metro teams got a glimpse of what was to come for 14 games...Gavin Hain slammed home a rebound off of a Alex Verbout shot and the Rangers were up 1-0.

The Rangers would score three of the next four goals and take a 4-1 lead...goals by Tyler Watkins, Verbout, and Brendan Durand. But late in the first half, Eastview's Chris Fan would beat Ranger Goalie on the five hole to cut the Ranger lead to 4-2 at the break.

Watkins would get his second of the game to give the Rangers a 5-3 lead midway through the half, but the Canadiens kept the pressure on. Coach Avi Friedman made some adjustments Saturday, moving James Marooney up to forward and K'Andre Miller back to defense - these moves paid dividends, Marooney had two points and Miller helped match the Rangers size and speed up front.

Late in the game, down 5-4 the District 10 duo of Connor Bizal and Soren Frakie hooked up to tie it. Frakie swept behind the net and found Bizal open in the slot and the second year Elk buried it to make it 5-5.

Afternoon Game: Winless Hawks beat Undefeated Wings 7-3

The Hawks came into their second game of the day with a bit of a chip on their shoulder, losing all four games but showing signs of potential in all four. The Wings came in on a high note, knocking off the Leafs 7-1, but down several key players including Jaxon Nelson and Aaron Grounds.

Down 1-0, the Hawks stormed back to score three goals, two by Griffin Ness and another by Lewis Crosby to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead at the break. Halfway through the second half, with the Hawks up 3-1 and on the powerplay, Jack Lagerstrom rifled in a wrist shot from the point to give the Hawks a commanding 4-1 lead. The Hawks would go on from there to win 7-3.

Afternoon Game: Rangers and Leafs skate to 5-5 tie

Garrett Worth buries the biscuit to tie the game for the Rangers

After a disappointing finish in their first game, the Rangers showed no signs of letting up versus the Leafs. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a natural Hat Trick by Virginia standout Jacob Seitz and a goal by Alex Verbout. But the Leafs would answer with three of their own two by Matt Jaglo, who would get a Hat Trick of his own later in the second half to cut the Rangers lead to 4-3 at the half.

The second half was all Leafs to start, Jaglo would get his Hatty to tie it and Nathan Johannes would intercept a Ranger pass and score short handed for the Leafs fifth unaswered goal. Duluth East's Garrett Worth would score on an all Duluth East goal to tie it 5-5. Assists coming from teammates Luke LaMaster and Ian Mageau. The last five minutes were spirited, but both goalies Carter Krier (Moorhead) and Isaiah DiLaura came up big to preserve ties for their team.

Saturday's Stars

Holy Family's James Marooney lights the lamp for the Habs.

Joey Petronack, White Bear Lake (Wings) - he is a rising star in this league. Has great hands, is very aggressive offensively and isn't afraid to mix it up. Had two goals in their 7-1 win over the Leafs.

Griffin Ness, Wayzata (Hawks) - amazing hands and quickness, makes opponents miss and has great scoring touch. Had 2 goals in Hawks win over Wings.

Matt Jaglo, Maple Grove (Leafs) - great hands and very hard nosed player. Gives great effort on every shift. Had a Hat Trick in 5-5 tie versus the Rangers.

Jacob Seitz, Virgina (Rangers) - athletic player who always seems to know where the puck is or is going to be. Made several great plays away from the puck and scoring ability with 3 goals against the Leafs.

James Marooney, Holy Family (Canadiens) - usually plays defense, but Saturday played forward and had 1G/1A for the Habs. Fun player to watch, who plays with a great deal of passion.

Luke LaMaster, Duluth (Rangers) - another versatile player who YHH has seen play both Forward and Defense - Saturday he anchored the Ranger blue line and added five assists in two games.

Unsung Heroes

Taylor Andersen, Bemidji (Rangers) - had a goal for the Rangers, played with confidence and great patience on the blue line.

Walter Brandt, Edina (Hawks) - had a goal and played with a lot of confidence in both zones.

Nathan Johannes, Jefferson (Leafs) - great speed, has found a way to score big goals for the Leafs so far.

Matthew Koethe, (Bruins) - slick skating and very crafty centerman, Koethe will find his way onto the score sheet a lot more this season for the Bruins. Had GWG Saturday.
