Four games, three ties headline Sunday's play

The Bantam Elite League featured four games Sunday. Three of which ended up in a tie. Some great see-saw games on Sunday that all went down to the wire. The morning game on rink 1 at Bloomington Ice Garden was a penalty marred affair with 26 minor penalties handed out and one ejection.

Sunday Morning: Leafs hold off Hawks 4-3 in a penalty marred game.

Elite League Leading Scorer Austin Pratt hits the pipe on a 5 on 3 PP.

In the first meeting between the Hawks and Leafs it seemed more like a fifth or sixth game of the NHL playoffs, where the two teams didn't like each other from the opening face-off. With each team having an instigator or two, the actual hockey was less the focal point versus the slashing, punching and stick swinging.

The Leafs had two goals by league scoring leaders Austin Pratt and Nathan Johannes and could have had many more in the first but were unable to convert. In the second half, the Hawks got on the board when Jake Zosel scored through traffic to make it 2-1. But Pratt answered for the Leafs a minute later to make it 3-1 and teammate Jordan Drobinski converted a 2 on 1 with Johannes to give the Leafs a 4-1 lead.

The Hawks would battle back when Griffin Ness and Lewis Crosby would score late, but they couldn't get the equalizer to tie it. Final 4-3, Leafs.

Sunday Morning: Bruins and Canadiens skate to 4-4 tie.

A back and forth game that with a lot of great goal scoring chances. Both teams lead during regulation. Clayton Phillips had two goals for the Canadiens including a shorth handed goal to tie it and then another goal to give the Canadiens the lead 4-3. Payton Matsui scored on a breakaway with two minutes left to tie it at 4. Matsui and Devlin McCabe ended the game with a goal and an assist and Jack Suchy added two assists for the Bruins. Phillips finished with two goals for the Canadiens.

Sunday Afternoon: Hawks tie Habs on late Swanson goal.

The Hawks and Canadiens met for the first time Sunday. It was the tale of two halves. The Hawks controlled the first half and the Canadiens controlled the second with a final score of 4-4.

The Hawks got scoring from the Usual Suspects, Griffin Ness, Lewis Crosby and Lucas McGregor taking a commanding 3-0 lead. But Eastview's Chris Fan would score a late first half goal to narrow their lead to 3-1 at the break.

During a 4 minute stretch the Canadiens dominated the Hawks, forcing turnovers and Hawks mistakes left and right. James Marooney was the catalyst for the Habs scoring two goals, including a go ahead goal with 9 minutes to go. The Hawks looked like they were going to fold, but they eventually fought back. Scrappy winger Bjorn Swanson from Edina got a loose puck in front of the Canadien net and buried past the glove hand of Cameron Smrekar to tie it. Final, Canadiens 4, Hawks 4.

Sunday Afternoon: Leafs and Bruins skate to 3-3 tie.

Bruins Matt Koethe scores in non-binding shoot out.

The Leafs and Bruins met for the second time in two weeks. The first matchup was a lopsided 7-0 win for the Leafs. The Leafs were playing their first game with a full team and Bruins had a light roster and were playing their second game of the day. Sunday's matchup was very fast paced with very few whistles and a lot of talent on display.

The Leafs got up early when Farmington's Zach Bauer and Bloomington's Nathan Johannes scored a minute apart to give the Leafs a 2-0 lead. The shots on goal were 23 to 6 heading into the final minute when Hutchinson's Brady Ziemer connected on a slap shot outside the blue line that blew right by Leaf Goalie Evan Redepenning to cut the Leaf lead to 2-1 at the break.

The second half was great back and forth play. Devlin McCabe showed why he is one of the top players in the BEL scoring on the first shift of the half to knot the score at 2-2. Maple Grove's Matt Jaglo got one back for the Leafs a few minutes later for the Leafs on a pass from Austin Pratt who showed he is more than just a goal scorer. Late in the game Ryan Elder evened the score with his second goal of the day. Elder an athletic big man from Minnetonka beat Isaiah DiLaura short side.

No team was able to score in the final stretch. Final score, Leafs 3, Bruins 3.
