Velocity 3v3: OMG goes for the Repeat from '13 Squirtacular

Will there be Deja Vu for the Crimson this weekend?

When looking at the field for top PeeWee teams this year, a writer must first look back to Squirts two years ago (or 18 months to be exact). The top two teams at year's end were Osseo Maple Grove and Rosemount. Other top teams were District 10 Champ Andover, Edina Green and White (merging this year could make them a tough team), Minneapolis (Runner-up in Fargo), and District 6 Champ Chaska Chan.

The Velocity 3v3 PeeWee Tournament does not feature Minneapolis, Andover, or Chaska Chan this year. Leaving the field of favorites to a merged Edina team, Maple Grove and Rosemount as the likely top three teams...of course, this all based on a cluster of data from two seasons ago at Squirts.

Speaking of two seasons ago, Osseo Maple Grove knocked off Rosemount in the season ending (unsanctioned) YHH Squirtacular....ending their undefeated season. It was a great game between two very talented teams that played hard in front of a packed house at Bloomington Ice Garden.

A lot can happen in 18 months, but no one knows exactly. That is what makes the Velocity 3v3 tourney so much fun. Lots of great teams rounding out their best 9 or 10 guys for an informal shot at glory.

Black Pool

Maple Grove's Justin Janicke with one of many Gs last year in Squirts.

Teams: Eden Prairie, Elk River, Mankato, Maple Grove, and Stillwater.

Two years ago, Stillwater came out of nowhere and won the Velocity 3v3 Squirt Tourney with a nice win over Maple Grove on Sunday. They could be the sleeper again this year. Eden Prairie and Elk River have nice balanced teams...the Elks have the upper hand in this pool experience-wise. Mankato has a nice roster of talented players that could be a surprise.

Favorite: Maple Grove has a deep roster of talent. Scorers Brock Faber ('14 Wiz Wyatt Player of the Year), Tyler Oakland ('13 Wiz Wyatt Finalist), and Justin Janicke are joined by blueline standouts Connor Kelley and Spencer Dahlquist. The key to a deep run may fall on the shoulders of netminder Cooper Olson this weekend.

Red Pool

Griffin Street earlier this year after scoring 4Gs and winning a Lotzza Motzza pizza.

Teams: Edina, Minnetonka, Rosemount, St. Louis Park, and Wayzata

A three team race in the Red Pool, Edina could be tough and Tonka should cause some trouble for their rivals in D6. A deep pool of second year players for the Skippers makes them the sleeper of the entire field. YHH has learned over time to never count out Minnetonka in PeeWee hockey. Speaking of PeeWee Hockey, Edina has lost once in PeeWees the last two association seasons. This will be another strong group of skaters, will they have enough to pressure Rosemount?

Favorite: Rosemount went undefeated in association hockey two years ago and won the Fargo International. This year they return the core of that team plus have added Mitchell Kohner to their team making them a strong contender for the top team in the state. Look for Luke Levondowksi, Keaton Kranz and AJ Anello to light the lamp this weekend for the Irish. Defensively big man Kyle Heffron ('13 Wiz Wyatt Finalist) and Broten Sabo will hold down the fort for Goalie Hunter Sandnas.

Winner is...

Championship: Two years ago at Squirts, Maple Grove knocked off Rosemount in an epic game of Titans. Kyle Kukkonen scored a top shelf game winner to beat the Irish late. Stillwater went on to beat the Crimson later that day for the glory. YHH says that you will likely see a rematch of that game Sunday with the slight edge to the Crimson. They have a smaller roster that is tailor made for a big run this weekend.

Sleepers: Did we mention Stillwater beat Maple Grove two years ago? The Stillwater team has a 3v3 rink in their back yard (The Lumberyard) and they know how to play this game. Experience plus talent makes this team a scary match up. Minnetonka is deep with talent...they have a super star in Streeter...that makes them trouble for opponents (and prognosticators).

Players to Watch

EP's Drew Holt had a hat trick in this game last year for the Eagles.

Here is a list of players that won't be hard to find this weekend in Eden Prairie:

Lily Delianedis, Edina - only the name is pretty. Delianedis (pronounced Da-Lan-Dis) is one of the most rugged and skilled players her age.

Lucas Hand, St. Louis Park - won't be the biggest kid on the ice, but may be the most skilled. His great hands and great vision will make him easy to spot.

Drew Holt, Eden Prairie - many argue that Drew is the inventor of 3v3 hockey. YHH discovered 3v3 hockey in fact predates Drew who was born in 2002, but for a kid who scores so much on any sized rink, it sure seemed like a believable assertion. Goalies beware.

Ben Leafblad, Maple Grove - if you hear a loud crash or see a big pile up, chances are good Leafblad will be in the middle of it for Maple Grove. Hard working kid whose motor is permanently stuck on high.

Griffin Streeter, Minnetonka - arguably the best PeeWee in Minnesota. In the past year has gone from good to great.

Charlie Strobel, Stillwater - great skater, beats his opponents with speed and balance. Versatile player with a huge long term upside.
