Elk River's Joe Nordstrom tickles the twine for the Elks.
3v3 hockey can be the great equalizer for youth hockey teams. Shorter games, teams that play a lot of 3v3, smaller teams and a hot goalie can quickly even a playing field. On Friday, YHH found all of the above.
Upset 1: St. Louis Park got off to a lead against neighbor Edina and was able to lean on Goalie Will Pinney to win 12-9. Lucas Hand had 5G/1A to lead the Orioles, while Pinney made 76 saves and had nearly a 90 percent save percentage for the hour.
Upset 2: After losing to St. Louis Park, Edina bounced back on 1 hours rest and beat pool favorite Rosemount 15-10, holding the high powered Irish at bay.
Near Upset 3: Tourney Favorite Maple Grove scored three late goals to pull away from Stillwater in the most high entertaining game of the night. Both teams moved the puck well and protected their net. Final score 11-7. Tyler Oakland had four points for the Crimson. The Ponies were lead by Nick Dario, Luke Hamp and Ryan Roeske each with a pair of goals.
Tonka > Wayzata (19-14)...Teddy Lagerbeck lead the Skippers to a win in the battle for Lake Minntonka bragging rights with 7G/2A in the highest scoring affair of the night. The South Lake boys were too much for their North Lake counterparts. Per Waage and Jack Kimlinger each had 4G for the Trojans.
Elk River > Eden Prairie (16-13)...Elk River used it's size and strength to outlast the Eagles. Zach Michaelis ('13 Wiz Wyatt Finalist) had 6G/3A and Austin Humphrey added 6G/2A for the Elks. Versatile defenseman Kai Stansberry had 4G/2A for the Eagles as they could not mount a late game comeback.
