An October Blizzard

As tryout out month continues, there has been a blizzard of news that has been dumped on our desks at YHH. Feels like mid-season to us. Here are some highlights of what we have learned.

Squirt Landscape Changes

Last year's Squirt A Squirtacular, Moose Goheen, Fargo and Regional Squirt Tourney Champs, Osseo Maple Grove

District 6 recently voted to not send their top two Squirt and U10 teams to the Regional Tournament this season. Likely removing four of the best teams from the event (2 Boys and 2 Girls). The district will also refrain from posting U10/Squirt Standings, citing differences with their developmental model.

District 3 voted to revoke their Squirt teams right to play two non-league games in one day. Their new language reads, "no more than one game or scrimmage per day, except for tournament play." This vote likely is in response to Osseo Maple Grove scheduling non-league doubleheader games (with proper rest) last season.

Both of these decisions are a direct result of the internal battle associations face to keep the game fun for the kids by playing more games versus more practice and development for Squirts. Standings for Squirts can lead to shortening the bench to finish better and force a win at all cost approach.

It's Gonna be a Good Show

Mahtomedi's Ryan Chesley

Registration has begun for tryouts for the Great Plains Show team set to play next Summer in Minneapolis. An incredible list of 2004 birth year players have signed up to tryout to play for Coach Dave Snuggerud next June. Standout Defensemen Jackson Anderson (Prior Lake), Ryan Chesley (Mahtomedi), and Jack Kritzeck (Mora) have committed to showing their skills in St. Cloud. Cruz Lucius (Blaine), JJ Wiebusch (River Falls, WI), and Dylan Godbout (Woodbury) head the list of snipers who will try to make an impression on the former Olympian and current Chaska High School coach.

Several more standout players from all over Minnesota (Grand Rapids, Moorhead, and Rochester to name a few) have signed up. YHH will be in St. Cloud to evaluate and cover the tryouts. The registration deadline is Wednesday, October 15. Rosters of tryout groups will be posted Thursday, October 16.

Big Pumpkin Brackets

YHH's first tournament of the season is set. Sixteen PWAA teams and eight PWA teams will be on the ice in Moorhead October 31 to November 2 in their quest for the Big Pumpkin. Several top teams and players from all over Minnesota will be there. The first round pairings will be announced, October 15 at 1:00 pm live on YHH.

Memorial Cup headed to Red Deer

Lakeville/SSM skater Austin Pratt

The WHL announced this week that the Memorial Cup will be headed to Red Deer, Alberta in 2016. Two of the best Division 1 uncommitted Minnesota '99 birth year players, Grant Mismash and Austin Pratt were drafted by the Rebels last Spring. If you do the math, Mismash and Pratt will be draft eligible that season. A guarantee to play in the Memorial Cup (the top NHL scouting event held just prior to the NHL Draft) could be a very tempting offer that these two Minnesota studs may not pass up.
