Strong third period propels Crimson to title in Moorhead

Sixteen great PeeWee teams converged on Moorhead this past weekend to find out who the best teams were heading into an exciting Winter campaign. Six teams seemed to stand out amongst the 16 in the field coming into the season: Andover, Chaska Chan, Edina, Minneapolis, Osseo Maple Grove, and Rosemount. Three of them made it to the Final Four and two lost in Quarterfinal heartbreakers. The best part of sports is that games are played fields, courts and ice sheets and not on the internet. One team made a splash, the Blaine Bengals beat Chaska Chan and Andover en route to an impressive fourth place finish.

PWAA: OMG touches gold on Sunday

Henry Nelson sneaks a shot past Edina Goalie for a 1-0 lead for OMG

Osseo Maple Grove came into Sunday's Final with wins over Duluth East, White Bear Lake, and Blaine. Edina beat Elk River, Minneapolis and Rosemount to earn a berth into the Championship Game.

First Period:

The game started fast with both teams coming out swinging for the fences with speed and puck movement. OMG's Henry Nelson got loose in Edina's high slot and rifled a pad high wrist shot past Edina Goalie Thomas Webert to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead 1:40 into the game. Three minutes later, '13 Wiz Wyatt Finalist Tyler Oakland showed why he is so good, when he toe dragged around a defender in the slot and shelfed a pretty backhand past Webert to give the Crimson a 2-0 lead. Both teams traded opportunities in the first, but the team defense kept most of the play on the perimeter. OMG lead 2-0. Shots after 1, were even 4-4.

Ben Dexheimer scores to cut the OMG lead to 2-1 on Sunday

Second Period

In the second, Edina began to hit their stride, getting better chances than in the first but no pay dirt. In the middle of the second, with a face off to the left of OMG Goalie Aaron Haider, Ben Dexheimer was the Center on the face-off. Like any great competitor, Dexheimer motioned to his Wing man, Will Soderling, that he was going to draw it back to him. But as the official dropped the puck, he poked it past his opponent and created a chance. His other Wing man, Mark Overman, got the rebound and banged it off Haider's blocker onto Dexheimer's stick and he buried it to cut the OMG lead to 2-1. Edina continued their pressure on OMG after that goal. With three minutes left in the period, Edina's Johnny Tucker fired a dump-in toward the OMG net and with Jack Sabre pressuring, Haider lost control of it and Sabre pounced on it and tied the score. For the final three minutes it was all Edina, but they could not convert leaving the score tied at 2 after 2. Shots in the second were 12 to 4 in favor of Edina.

Kyle Kukkonen scores GWG for OMG

Third Period

After a resurface, both teams came out flying in the third. More shots were getting to the nets now. Haider and Webert began to really feel their groove stopping first and second shot opportunities. In the middle of the third, Edina took a penalty and OMG got the puck set up on the Power Play. OMG's Connor Kelley got a puck at the point and fired a waist high wrist shot on net. The puck hit Kyle Kukkonen's stick and it re-directed past Webert for the go ahead goal with 8 minutes to go. Usually when a team takes a lead in an important game, it is natural to take fewer chances  and play stronger defense. OMG did just the opposite, they pressured Edina and got more scoring chances. Their Defense did a great job of holding Edina in their own end. For five minutes of play it was all OMG. With a face-off in the OMG zone, Edina pulled Webert for an extra attacked and began to threaten. The Hornets got a few good chances but could not get the bounce they were looking for to tie it. With a minute to go, Tournament MVP got a loose puck at center ice and skated the puck to the goal to ice the victory for the Crimson. Final score 4-2. Final SOG, Edina 23, OMG 15.

Tournament MVP

Brandon Reller, Big Pumpkin MVP

Brandon Reller is a high octane forward for OMG. He has great speed and really good hands with an ability to score big goals in big games. He finished the Pumpkin with seven Goals including a Hatty against Duluth East, a GWG against White Bear on Saturday, two Goals against Blaine in the semifinals (one was a highlight reel variety) and an empty net goal to ice the win for the Crimson in the Finals. A great weekend for an '03 birth year first year player.

All Tournament Team will be released Tuesday on YHH.
