Two Teams Headed in the Right Direction

Axel Toft scores for the Storm Saturday

On Saturday I returned to Parade Ice Garden where I played almost every home youth hockey game. Parade South was recently remodeled with new glass, paint and new boards. A very nice and very much needed remodel in the city.

Minneapolis came in #7 NOW Ranked with a 9-2-4 record. Edina came in Top Ranked in both the NOW and Staff Rankings with a 9-1-2 record. Both teams have a lot of speed and a deep bench. The Storm has a few really nice defensemen that match up well against just about any team in Minnesota. The Hornets are loaded with skill players on both sides of the ice.

Game Recap

Will Soderling celebrates his go ahead goal for the Hornets

The game got off to a fast start. Both teams took no time to feel each other out. The Hornets converted first when Ben Dexheimer scored on a wrap around on the power play three minutes into the game. The Storm would go on the PP right after and tie the score. It was the prettiest goal of the night. Will Mortenson got the puck on the half wall and quickly fed Gavin Best down low and he one timed it to Landon Peterson on the back door and he was all finish, not Swedish.

Early in the second, scrappy winger Axel Toft gave the Storm the lead on a nifty backhander that beat Edina Goalie Ramsey Bell. After the Toft goal, the Hornets took over, outshooting the host Storm 12-2 in the period. One of those shots was by Edina Blueliner Johnny Tucker who unloaded a bomb from the point that hit traffic and eventually the back of the MPLS net to tie it. A few minutes later, Tucker fired another big shot past Minneapolis Goalie Kiron Morioka...this time it hit the cross bar and fell to the ice. Edina Forward Will Soderling buried the rebound top shelf to give the Hornets a 3-2 after 2.

The third period evened out...with both teams getting chances. The Hornets looking to get an insurance goal and the Storm looking to tie. After an Edina penalty, Minneapolis got the equalizer when Will Mortenson found Joe Miller in the slot and Miller buried it past Bell to tie the score with five minutes left to end the game with a 3-3 tie.

Game Notes

Kiron Morioka makes a save Saturday for MPLS

Short Game: District 3 Rules say PWAA games play 1 Hour, 12 minutes top periods with 1:30 Penalties which seems a bit short for teams of the ability.

All Name Team: The Storm has some great first names...Mackie (Zabinski), Seamus (Foley), Axel (Toft), Dante (Hajani), and Kiron (Morioka).

Players to Watch: Will Svenndal from Minneapolis is a special talent for the Storm. He knows the game well, he attacks and pushes the game with great pace. Jack Lynch for Edina has great speed and is really starting to shine for the Hornets.
