Spuds' Wyatt Gunkel nets GWG in OT

Moorhead celebrates their GWG in OT and Championship in the Grand Rapids Tourney.

First Period...Advantage Blaze

Zach Branham's wrist shot beat's Moorhead Goalie Will Kunka to give the Blaze a 1-0 lead.

Sunday up in Grand Rapids Moorhead and Burnsville faced off to decide who would be champions of the the Star of The North Tournament.  The way both teams played in pool play, a great game was anticipated and that is what they delivered.  Moorhead dominated play early, generating scoring chances off of it's forecheck but could not draw first blood.  Burnsville got their feet moving aided by a Moorhead penalty and settled in creating their own quality scoring chances on the power play.  Moorhead's Will Kunka however stood tall in goal as Moorhead survived being down a man.  Moorhead went down a man again and after several attempts to clear the puck, Burnsville was able to draw first blood as Jack Branham's wrist shot from the circle off a Kole Pearson pass found the back of the net.  Burnsville took a late period penalty sending them to the locker room with a 1-0 lead and Moorhead on the power play.

Second Period...Holy potatoes!!!

Michael Overbo connects for one of his 2 Goals Sunday for the Spuds.

That late penalty would prove costly as Moorhead's Carter Johnson was able to create a break away off the opening face off and with a nifty move put the puck in the back of the net to even the score at 1.  Whatever the Spud's coaching staff said to their team between periods seemed to be working as moments later Michael Overbo and Cade Moilanen skated into the Burnsville zone 2-1 with Overbo burying Moilanen's pass.  Burnsville continued to battle however consecutive trips to the penalty box finally caught up with them.  Moorhead caught the Blaze on a line change and a nice passing play from Cullen Gess and Cade Moilanen set Michael Overbo up for his second goal of the game and all of a sudden Moorhead was up 3-1.  Things didn't look good for the Blaze but they kept battling and it paid off as Benny Botz got the puck from Sam Rhode deep in the Moorhead zone and beat Kunkel high blocker side to make the score 3-2.  The period would end that way with Moorhead holding a one goal lead setting us up for a wild third period.

Third Period...The Blaze catch fire

Both teams came out flying in the third period with Moorhead searching to extend its lead and Burnsville pressing for the equalizer.  Both teams had power play opportunities but neither goalie would budge as the third period was played at a furious pace.  The Blaze finally found the net and the equalizer they had been battling for when Sam Rhode got the puck down low passed the puck to Jayden Glassen whose wrist shot from the circle found it's way to the back of the net and a fantastic finish was on us.  Both teams tried to end the game in regulation but this game was destined for overtime.

OT...Wyatt Gunkel makes it rain

Overtime gave the fans great effort from both teams and you could see in the competitive play that both teams wanted to be crowned the champion.  Early play had each team trading scoring chances. However, Moorhead gradually took control of overtime creating the better scoring opportunities and applying pressure in the offensive zone.   That pressure ended up creating the opportunity for Wyatt Gunkel to be the hero and collect the game winning goal for Moorhead.  Gunkel saw an opportunity to step up from his defensive position attack the Burnsville net and get his shot to somehow find its way to the back of the net and setting up a huge celebration behind the Burnsville goalie.  This is exactly what a fan would expect to see in a tournament championship game.
