In the first round of the Lumberjack Cup, Minneapolis was upset by Forest Lake, a team that currently holds a record of 3-23-3.That loss must have lit a fire under the Storm, as they outscored their next four opponents 22-7 en route to claiming the championship.
The Storm defeated Rochester 5-1 in Sunday’s championship game, avenging the Forest Lake loss and prompting star forward Mackie Zabinski to break into a dance that most boys his age wouldn’t be caught dead performing. Zabinski could be heard singing and dancing to “I’m a Little Teapot” in the Storm locker room after the game, much to delight of his whooping and laughing teammates. Zabinski had special reason to dance after the game. He scored a goal and added two assists as the Storm dominated Rochester in every facet of the game.
The Storm outshot Rochester 30-13, and held the definitive advantage in puck possession, cycling through the Rochester zone time and time again. In addition to Zabinski, Minneapolis got goals from Ben Murray, Will Svenddal, Erik Clow, and Charlie Warnert.
The only goal scored on Storm goaltender Kiron Morioka’s came on a breakaway late in the first period. Morioka shut down Rochester the rest of way, turning away 12 shots in the win.
