Top Rated Husky Teams Earn their top Rating with Impressive Wins Monday

Andover Hockey over the past five years has shown promising signs. That said, their teams have mostly played the role of bridesmaid and not bride (or groom) at the elite level of Minnesota Hockey. This year, their U10A and Squirt A teams are off to a fast start. Coming out of Christmas break both teams were undefeated and ranked number 1 in Minnesota. Monday night, YHH took in games played by both number ones back to back in their home rink in Andover.

Andover's Josie Hemp scores for the Huskies Monday in their 5-1 win over Blaine.

In the first game, the girls took on Blaine who came into the game 7-2-1 ranked number 12 in the YHH NOW Rankings. Andover was met with a formidable challenge in the first period. Blaine had a number of great chances lead by Shelby Sandberg and Danielle Brunette. Both players kept the Bengals inside the the Husky zone for much of the second half of the First Period including 2 or 3 great scoring chances. The Bengals outshot the Andover 5 to 1 in the first.

The second period was all Andover. The Huskies put constant pressure on Blaine Goalie Hailey Hansen, but could not solve the southpaw for much of the second period. Andover's lone goal in the second came on a crazy shot by Josie Hemp that hit sticks, bodies and even a shoulder that finally found the nylon to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead after the second period.

The third period was more of the same for Andover. They became very comfortable in the Blaine zone as the Bengals began to run out of steam. Joise Hemp would get her second of the night on a pretty outside move and an even prettier top shelf wrist shot to give Andover a 2-0 lead. For most of the game Sara Kaiser had shown signs of promise for the Huskies, but she couldn't quite break through. In the middle of the third she got loose and scored on a rocket from the slot to make it 3-0 in favor of the Huskies as they went on to win 5-1. Kaiser had two goals and was hard to stop all night as the Huskies padded their record to 15-0-1.

Right now Andover is the best U10A we've seen so far this year. Like the boys, the U10A level has a few very tough teams waiting in the wings. Lakeville and Eastview in District 8, both Edina teams and Eden Prairie District 6 look strong as does Stillwater in District 2.

In the second game, Andover's Squirt A team came in 10-0-0, ranked number 1 in both the Staff and NOW Rankings. Spring Lake Park came in 9-4-2 and in third place in District 10. The Andover boys started where the girls left off. They scored four goals in the first period all by different players. Spring Lake Park struggled to get the puck out of their own end all night, especially in the first period when the smallish and faster Husky players swarmed them like piranhas. The final two periods were merely an exercise of how fast and how productive could Andover be on Monday night with their scoring opportunities. On this night they played like they were on a mission, scoring in bunches, mostly close in after repeated attempts by Spring Lake Park to clear their zone. The final score was 9-0. Andover was lead by Gavyn Thoreson who finished the night with 3 Goals and an Assist...he earned a YHH Hatty and our Lotzza Motzza Player of the Game.

This Andover team is special. They have a lot of speedy players who have great skill as well. Thoreson and Andrew Chevalier stood out up front creating goal scoring opportunity after opportunity all night. Kyle Law is a great asset for the Huskies. He is a bigger kid with a lot of skill on the blue line that will be able to match up with some of the better skill forwards they will face this year. Other stand outs for the black and gold were Noah Martin (#3), Weston Knox (#4) and Hudson Zinda (#5)...these three come at you with a zeal for the game that is fun to watch. This team has a personality of many of the great undefeated teams we have seen the past few years at Squirt A. They play fast, they are unselfish and they are very well coached. On one such sequence in the second period, Spring Lake Park had possession in the neutral zone. Andover created a turnover and three passes later the Huskies had created a two on one the other way in transition.

This season in Squirt A there are several great teams that can challenge this Andover team. Woodbury, Mahtomedi, Eden Prairie, Osseo Maple Grove and Prior Lake to name a few. This corner of YHH sees this team as a favorite to go undefeated this year.
