Armstrong gets on the board against MVI Sunday at Breezy Point

This past Friday through Sunday Breezy Point Ice Fest Hockey Tournaments hosted an eight team Peewee A tournament up at Breezy Point Arena.  Tournament format was two four team pools with the top two teams in each pool andvancing to two elimination games Sunday morning with the winners meeting to determine the champion.  Pool A consisted of Sartell, Blaine, Spring Lake Park and Mounds View Irondale.  Pool B teams were Northern Lakes, Centennial, MAML, and Armstrong/Cooper.

Pool Play

Mounds View Irondale claimed the number one seed in Pool A defeating Spring Lake Park 5-3, Sartell 4-1, and Blaine 4-1.   Also advancing to the elimination round as the number two seed from this group was Blaine.  They achieved this by defeating Sartell 4-1 and Spring Lake Park 6-2 along with a 4-1 loss to MVI.  Sartell went 1-2 in pool play defeating Spring Lake Park 7-1 along with suffering losses to Blaine and MVI.  Spring Lake Park played hard but just could not collect a win losing to Blaine, MVI, and Sartell.

Pool B was not as clear to sort out as no team swept pool play and three ties were also produced.  After everthing was sorted out Armstrong/Cooper emerged as the number 1 seed by tying MAML 3-3, defeating Northern Lakes 3-2 and shutting out Centennial 4-0.  MAML ended up the number two seed with its 3-3 tie with Armstrong/Cooper, 4-4 tie in its matchup with Centennial, and defeating Northern Lakes 7-2 for its sole win in pool play.  Centennial had a 5-2 win over Northern Lakes along with its 4-4 tie with MAML and its 0-4 loss to Armstrong/Cooper.  Northern Lakes like Spring Lake Park played hard but was unable to skate away with a win in pool play going 0-3 and earning a chance for a win in a participation game with Spring Lake Park.

Elimination Games

Teams were cross seeded for the elimination games which ended up providing two very good matchups.  In the early morning game MVI on MAML in the acronym bowl.  Both teams woke up and came to the rink ready to play, wanting to take away the title of Ice Fest Champion.  Periods one and two produced scoring opportunities for both teams but neither could solve the others goaltender as after two, the score was the same as where this one started 0-0.  Jake McAlpine from MVI finally tallied a power play goal from in front of the net with an assist going to Griffin Bourassa.  MAML's Matt Miller answered MVI late in the game with a power play goal assisted by Brian Cornelius and Jeffrey Henrickson and this game headed to overtime.  A winner was not decided during the 4 on 4 sudden death overtime and they were headed to a shootout to determine the winner.  Tyler Chamberlain started the shootout for MVI and produced the highlight of the tournament by moving in on goal faking a shot, going to his backhand to deke the goaltender and then back to his forehand to tuck the puck past the goalie.  George DeMay and Max Kueppers were also succesfull on their shootout attempts for MVI as they went 3-3.  Jeffrey Henrickson and Matt Miller tallied for MAML but Brian Cornelius was unable to find the net and extend the shootout sending MVI to the championship.

Elimination game two pitted Armstrong/Cooper against Blaine.  This game was another exciting game and produced more scoring than the first elimination game.  Armstrong/Cooper jumped out to a two goal lead with goals by Jack Campion and Ben Anderson with assists going to Joe Campion and Jack Campion also picking up an assist on Anderson's goal.   Blaine however responded with an unassisted goal in the first period by Aiden Berthiaume ending the period with Blaine down 2-1.  Blaine's Joey Smith scored the only goal of the second with Nathan Bennett collecting the assist to tie the game at two.   Armstrong/Cooper however would tally twice in the third with goals scored by Jack Campion and Ben Anderson with assists going to Ben Anderson and Jake Voorhees giving Armstrong/Cooper a 4-2 win and a matchup with MVI in the Championship.

MAML scores first in the Third Place Game Sunday.

Third Place Game

Blaine and MAML gave us another good game on Sunday as they recovered from their earlier losses and played hard wanting to finish the tournament with a win.  Both teams had scoring chances throughout the first period but neither team could gain the upper hand and the period ended in a 0-0 tie.  The second period was also back and forth with both teams having near misses.  Late in the second MAML was able to break the tie when Matt Miller found himself in front of the net to slam hope a rebound off a shot from the point.  Brian Cornelius collected another goal for MAML less than a minute later and all of a sudden MAML was up 2-0 after two.  Blaine played hard but for all their effort they could not light the lamp and and when MAML's Matt Miller slammed home Jeffrey Henrickson's pass from the corner Blaine's attempt at a comeback would be over as MAML skated to a 3-0 third place win.

The celebration for AC was a blur on Sunday.

Championship

Moundsview/Irondale and Armstrong Cooper both traded scoring chances early in this matchup as both teams spent the first shifts trying to get the all important first goal.  Armstrong/Cooper eventually would draw first blood as Jake Voorhees unleased a rocket from the point that went off MVI goalie Elijah Kaasa and found its way into the net.  MVI  would answer collecting the next two goals of the period the first by Ryan Collins and the second coming from Quinton Peterson on a nice cross ice pass from Griffin Bourassa.  Teddy Campion scored early in the second for Armstrong/Cooper to even the score and setting us up for an up and down the ice second period.  However that would be the only goal of the period sending us to the third tied at two goals each.  Both teams continued to trade scoring chances during the third period until Matt Campion got the puck on his stick took the puck hard to the net and found the back of the goal with a pretty backhand shot and great effort putting Armstrong/Cooper up 3-2.  Moundsview/Irondale continued to press for the tying goal and pulled is goalie with 1:30 seconds left in the game and came close on a couple of tries.  They would be presented with and even better opportunity to tie the game when Armstrong/Cooper was called for an unsportsmanlike and delay of game penalty.  With its goalie pulled MVI had a 6-3 opportunity in the Armstrong/Cooper end for the final minute of play.  This advantage set the stage for a flurry of shots and wild play but in the end Armstrong/Cooper was able to hang on for a 3-2 Championship win.

MVI puts on late last ditch effort to tie.
