Rochester Trips Andover 3-1 to advance to Quarterfinals

Rochester celebrates their win over Andover

An exciting day of hockey Saturday in Bloomington that sent 16 teams into Bracket play, 8 in the A and 4 each in the B and C. All 16 had to win or tie to punch their ticket on Saturday. All but 6 games were played at historic Bloomington Ice Garden. Number 1 Andover fell to Rochester in an epic game of the day and Edina Green scored two goals in the last two minutes of the game to knock off NSP Revolution. Rosemount knocked off 7 seed Eden Prairie  5-3 with four goals in the third period. Three of the four top rated B Teams advanced to Monday with wins and four C teams earned their way into the Final Four.

Pool A: Rochester > Andvoer (3-1)....Rochester and Andover played an unbelievable back and forth game. Rochester held off a massive Andover charge in the first period outshooting the Reds 10-3...without a great performance from Tate Cothern Andover could have pulled away. Andover got a nice goal from Logan Gravink to give the Huskies the lead. Late in the first, Hunter Hady fired a high wrist shot from the point that meandered through 5 or 6 bodies and beat a screened Austin Brauns top shelf to tie it at 1 after 1. No more goals were scored until late in the game, but that doesn't mean there wasn't drama. With 1:44 left in the game, an Andover player hooked a Rochester player in the neutral zone for the game's first penalty. Editor's Note: a noticeably bad call that caused the game to spiral into a frenzy. While shorthanded, Andover's Kyle Law picked up a loose puck and broke free, he was dragged down from behind. A call that could have been a penalty shot, but was not. While falling, Law ran into Cothern and drove he and the puck into the net. The referee had two tough choices in a split second. First, was it a goal? And second, if it was not, was it a Penalty Shot? He ruled No Goal and Tripping on Javan Hodge from Rochester. Much to the dismay of the Andover faithful. Having to win, Andover was forced to pull their goalie despite playing in a tie hockey game. Rochester stars Prscott Sexton and Tyler Haskins found the empty cage in the final minute to lead the Reds past Andover who were number 1 in the State and unbeaten in their first 17 games.

Olivia Cronin had 35 saves for Madison on Saturday.

Pool B: OMG > Lakeville South (3-0)..The Crimson advanced to Bracket play and kept their season's unbeaten streak to 23 games. Three OMG skaters scored (Matzke, Giullliani, and Jaglo) and Alec Juenke was anything but garbage for the Crimson making 31 saves and earning the shutout.

Pool C: Woodbury > Madison (3-1)...Woodbury got more than they bargained for Saturday, Madison shook off their bus legs and hung tough with the Predator until the end. Nick Landin got the GWG with 1:14 left in the game. The Preds pumped 37 shots on POTG Olivia Cronin, she came away with 35 saves for the day. The Predators advance to Bracket play and will take on Edina White.

Max Burkholder's shot from the point hits traffic and pops over Chase Carlson into the net.

Pool D: Mahtomedi > Champlin Park (5-1)...The Zephyrs blew past Champlin on two goals by Jack Dardis. Ryan Chesley added a goal and an assist for Mahtomedi who advanced with an easy run through pool play compared to the other top seeds.

Pool E: Chask Chan > Hermantown (2-1)...The Stormhawks did just enough to get past Hermantown Saturday, getting two goals, one in the second on a rebound goal by Gavin Nahan and deflection goal by Max Burkholder. Hermantown would make a late bid when Zam Plante got free and scored on a breakaway.

NSP Revolution Coach Brooke White was lonely Saturday on the bench, the Rev only has 8 skater and two Goalies.

Mitchell Dokman lights the lamp for the Hornets in their 3-2 comeback win.

Pool F: Edina > Mounds View Irondale (5-2)...Ryan Spindler had two goals and Otto Schreiner added a goal and an assist to lead Edina White into the Squirtacular Final 8. The Hornets will face Woodbury on Sunday in what will be a great game. Edina came out of the tough pool undefeated with three nice wins under their belt.

Pool G: Rosemount > Eden Prairie (5-3)...Rosemount scored four third period goals to beat the high powered Eagles 5-3. The Irish scored three goals in a 30 second span, including two by Owen Hendrikson. Charlie Stramel would get the GWG for the Irish as they advanced to the Final 8 on Sunday against Osseo Maple Grove.

Pool H: Edina > NSP Revolution (3-2)...In one of the most exciting games of the tourney, Edina scored two late goals to win and advance to the Quarterfinals against Rochester. Due to tie breaker rules, Edina needed a win over the Revolution to make it. The Revolution, teamed with only 8 skaters and 2 Goalies, got the lead when Leo Gruba made a pretty highlight reel move to get open and then beat the goalie. Almost as impressive as his goal was his jump into the glass celebration to follow! Down 2-1, Jimmy Clark scored after a deflection hit Rev Goalie Damian VanDanacker in the pad. The final four minutes was about as much fun as you will find watching a Squirt hockey game. Players were flying everywhere, both teams knowing exactly what was on the line...a chance to advance. With under two minutes to go, Edina started to pull their goalie (Schroepfer) until they realized that the Revolution was on the attack. They put him back in, which created some drama. Meanwhile Revolution fans were counting 7 players on the ice for Edina. While the adults were getting into it, both on the bench and in the stands, one player spoke the loudest. Mitchell Dokman, used his speed and good hands to find space fired a shot across his body past VanDanacker's right pad for the win. In a manner of four minutes The Revolution went from Quarterfinals to Crossover. The little engine that could ran out of steam right at the top of the mountain.

Edina White (over Woodbury) vs. Mahtomedi (over CC)
