Quarterfinal Summaries and Picks for Monday Champions for A, B, and C

Jonathan Montang scores for CC to ice the game in the third period

Chaska Chan > Mahtomedi (2-0)...Chaska Chan came into the Quarterfinals as a non-seeded team that played on a mission winning all three Pool Play games. They took on third ranked Mahtomedi who also took care of business in Pool Play. Both teams showed great speed and stellar defense and goaltending the entire game, never letting up. Chaska scored first on a Jack Seaverson shot late in the second period that was set up by a Jimmy Snuggerud pass in front. Jonathan Montang got an insurance goal early in the third while charging the net to beat Mahtomedi star goalie Ben Dardis.

Riley Spindler's GWG in OT lifts the Hornets into Championship Monday

Edina White > Woodbury (2-1, OT)...Woodbury came out flying, rifling shot after shot on Edina Goalie Finn Dexheimer, who saved 12 of 13 shots in the first period. The lone shot was a goal by Jake Fisher who snuck in a low shot off of a third rebound attempt on Dexheimer. After the first period, Edina began to even out the flow of the game and began to neutralize the Predators. Down 1-0 late in the third period, Henry Whitleff got a loose puck on a neutral zone turnover and fired a high wrist shot past Woodbury Goalie Marko Belak to tie the score. Late in the game, Dexheimer (and his best pal the goal post) fought off a late Predator attack to keep the score tied going into Overtime. A couple minutes into the OT, Sam Garza tipped a loose puck in the slot to Riley Spindler who backhanded a shot past Belak for the GWG to lift Edina into the Final Four.

Tyler Fredrichs doing his best Kyle Kukkonen impression buries one top shelf for the Crimson.

Osseo Maple Grove > Rosemount (3-0)..coming into the Quarterfinals OMG had never lost a Squirtacular game, winning 13 and tying as part of an impressive streak of nearly 90 games without a loss dating back to February of 2013. On Sunday, they used an impressive formula of fierce forechecking and great defense to simply outlast a very tough Rosemount team. Up 1-0 late in the second period, the Crimson found themselves two men short on two straight penalties. After killing off one of the two sins, Aidan McMahon fought through some traffic to get loose in the Rosemount zone where he found OMG sniper Tyler Fredrichs open on an odd man rush. Fredrichs found a seam over the shoulder of Rosemount Goalie Andrew Murphy and buried it top shelf for a back breaking short handed goal to give his team a 2-0 lead. Late in the game, OMG salted away another Squirtacular victory when Nathan Jaglo beat Murphy with a shot through traffic for the final 3-0 margin.

Rocherster's Tyler Haskins showing off his POTG award after their 6-4 win on Sunday

Rochester Red > Edina Green (6-4)...after three low scoring games and two low scoring periods Sunday, Edina and Rochester erupted for eight goals in the third period. The "Red Rockets" had five of them lead by all star Centerman Tyler Haskins who finished the game with 2G/2A. Haskins established himself as one of the top Squirt players in Minnesota with some of the most dazzling goals in the third period splitting the defense and beating Bryce Hess far side for the Wow goal of the tournament. Edina, missing top scorers Wyatt Wurst and Nick Mikan did not quit. Mitchell Dokman and Tommy Cronin put their team on their backs and cut into the Rochester lead showing remarkable skill and fortitude until the end. Both teams and fan bases gave it their all the entire game. Rochester has all the tools (teamwork, size, speed) to take the Squirtacular Skates south for the year. To win the Skates (Squirtacular Traveling trophy) they will have had to have beaten Andover (current YHH #1), OMG (nearly 90 Squirt A games with out a loss) and the Chaska Chan Edina Winner. Pulling that off deserves more than an old pair of crummy skates!
