Moorhead celebrates 50 Years of Hockey

Last weekend, Moorhead Hockey celebrated their High School's 50th Anniversary.  Inviting back all former players and fans to see the fruits of their labor in an all day hockey extravaganza at both their Youth Rink and the Moorhead Sports Center.

Moorhead, a program that now has over 500 players from Mites to High School and boasts 14 state tournament appearances over the last 22 years including an amazing seven Runner-ups without a title.

All tolled, over 5,000 people attended the 50th Anniversary. The days events which included several games between the tater tot Spuds all the way up to the High School Spuds at night.  Before the high school game, the original 1964-65 team was introduced and between the first and second periods they honored former NHL players Ryan Kraft, Brian Lee, Matt Cullen,and Jason Blake. One of the highlights of the weekend came during the second intermission when the first ever state tournament team from 1992 was introduced.

After the Spuds 6-2 win over Roseau the celebration continued at the Courtyard by Marriot in Moorhead. Larry Knutson, longtime voice of the Spuds emceed the event and local PA man, Jeff Miller, re-introduced the 1992 team and several others spoke about the great hockey heritage that has been built in Moorhead. Speakers on Saturday were MYHA President Brian Stavenger, former coach Dave Morinville, current coach Jon Ammerman, and legendary past coach Terry Cullen.
