Northern Lakes hosts Fergus, Wadena and Greenway

John Spalj Arena in Crosby, MN hosted two Bantam A matchups along with an intriguing PWA matchup this past weekend.  The Northern Lakes Lightining Bantam A team hosted district foes Wadena on Friday night and Fergus Falls on Saturday.  All three teams were hoping to skate away with points as they all are looking to improve their seeding for the upcoming District 15 tournament.  The PWA game featured a rematch for the host Lightning as they looked to avenge an earlier season loss to Greenway.

Andrew Sundby scores for Wadena Friday on the rebound.

Bantam A: Northern Lakes takes out Wadena 5-1

Wadena's Preston Warren is the Captain of his squad.

Wadena showed up in Crosby on Friday night looking to avenge an earlier season loss to the Lightning and improve their position in the district standings.  Northern Lakes on the other hand was looking to sweep the season series and climb out of the cellar of the district standings.  Both teams came out flying in the first looking for that all important first goal, however, neither goalie would budge as both teams produced early scoring chances.  The Lightnting were able to draw first blood as Luke Gangl scored off a Zach Myhre pass to get things going for the Lightning.  Gangl's goal energized the Lightning and Garrett Westlund tallied an unassisted goal shortly after to put the Lighting up 2-0 midway through the first.

The second period began with more Lightning pressure and the Lightning went up 3-0 when Westlund tallied his second goal of the game with John Maverick and Nathan Finnerty collecting assists on the goal.  Wadena began to punch back and got back into the game when Andrew Sundby was able to find the back of the net.  The Lightning turned up the pressure after the Wadena goal and Drew Elfering goal gave the Lighning a three goal lead after two periods of play.  The third period was more Lighning dominance as their forecheck kept Wadena bottled up and Brendahn Knox sunk any Wadena hopes for a comeback when he scored on slapshot from the point to wrap up the scoring for the Lightning as they skated away with a 5-1 win.

Northern Lakes scored a win over District Rival Fergus Falls Saturday

Bantam A: Lighning get weekend sweep, beat Fergus Saturday 3-1

Fergus gets a goal on a shallow angle shot

The Lightning looked to use momentum gained from Friday night's win meanwhile Fergus Falls hoped its physical play would produce a win in the first matchup of the season for these two teams.  Neither team seemed willing during the first period as both teams went at it up and down the ice.  Both teams had quality scoring chances but neither team could find the back of the net.  Things changed though late in the period when the Lightning forced a turnover in the Fergus Falls zone and Drew Elfering found the back of the net to put the Lightning up 1-0.

The second period brought much of the same style as the first until Declan Young was able to score on a sharp angle shot dreated off a Lightning turnover to even the score at one.  Fergus Falls physcal style of play would cost them however as Brendahn Knox and Nathan Finnerty were able to score power play goals for the Lightning putting them up 3-1 after two.  Those power play goals proved to be the difference as the Lightning forecheck and effort in the defensive zone limited Fergus Falls scoring chances the rest of the way and allowed the Lightning to get its second district win in two days.  End result Northern Lakes 3 Fergus Falls 1.

PeeWee A: Greenway makes Lightning see red.

Greenway's Mitchell Vekich scores Saturday for Greenway

This meeting was the second meeting of the season for these two teams.  Greenway hoped to get back on track after a mid season break. Meanwhile, the Lightning were looking to show they are an improved team since their earlier 9-2 loss to Greenway.  Special teams play would be huge early in this game as 5 of the first six goals were produce with a man advantage.  Greenway got things started  when Mitchell Vekich scored on the power play with assists going to Cameron Lantz and Ben Troumbley.  This would prove to be the only goal of a fast paced up and down the ice first period.  Greenway definately had some rust from their mid-season break, but the Lightning effort showed they are much improved from the earlier meeting.

Zechariah Trenkenschuh scores one of his two goals Saturday

The second period was more of the same with both teams going up and down the ice wanting that next goal.  As mentioned, Special Teams would play significant role in the early goals of this contest.   The Lightning where rewarded with a power play, however, Greenway's Christian Miller showed some skill getting the puck in the neutral zone rushed past the Lightning defenders and burried a shot to for a shorthanded goal.  The Lightning however did not quit after going down 2-0 early in the second.  Once again, the Lightning found themselves on the power play.  This time, Zechariah Trenkenschuh took a pass from Shane Donovan and buried it to make the score 2-1.  Later in the period, Trenkenschuh took advantage of another Greenway penalty.  This time Lightning goalie Sam Lemieur played a loose puck up to Shane Donovon, who got the puck to Trenkenschuh behind the Greenway defenders for a breakaway goal to even the game at 2-2.  Tucker Jobe produced an even strength Lighting goal to give the Lighting its first lead of the game at 3-2.  The power play finally went Greenway's way when Ben Troumbley found the back of the net with Cameron Lantz and Christain Miller collecting the assists.  This ended the scoring of a wild second period that left things where we started with both teams tied.

Ben Troumbley got things going for Greenway in the third as Greenway shook off the rust and scored the next four goals.  With Mitchell Vekich, Cameron Lantz, and Grant Alto finding the net for Greenway in the third.  Northern Lakes did not go quietly however as they produced scoring opportunities of their own in third but were unable to light the lamp.  The end result was a Greenway heading home with a 7-3 win.

Greenway gets 4 goals in the third to win 7-3
