Late game heroics pay off for #1 team in Minnesota

Gavin Best's goal set off a celebration for the Storm Sunday

Gavin Best ties it for Minneapolis late in the game.

The Moose Goheen Invitational Pewee AA championship was one for the ages. The back-and-forth battle between the top two teams in the state came down the wire, as should be expected from two teams that have never had a score between them settled by more than two goals.

These teams have faced each other three times this season, with Edina winning in a shootout against the Storm in the Big Pumpkin Tournament, a tie in league play, and a recent victory for Minneapolis by a 3-1 score, which included an empty net goal.

Minneapolis scored with 26 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, and then scored at 2:32 of overtime to claim the title. The magic man behind both of those goals was Gavin Best, who lived up to his name with a hat trick and an assist in the victory. Joey Miller got the scoring started with a power play goal at 6:29 of the first period, depositing the puck into the net after a series of perfect passes by Best and Will Mortenson. Edina answered with a goal by Will Soderling, assisted by Mark Overman, and we ended the first period knotted at 1-1. Best started his scoring spree with the lone goal of the second period, poking the puck through a pile of bodies in front of the Edina net to put the Storm up 2-1 after two frames. Edina tied the score 2-2 on a goal by Emmett Wurst, who managed to whack a rebound past Storm goalie Kiron Morioka. It seemed as though the Hornets would escape with the victory, as Jackson Borst scored to put Edina up 3-2 with just 1:23 to play in regulation.

MPLS Joe "Mouse" Miller scored the GTG Saturday against Blaine.

The Storm pulled Morioka, and the 6-on-5 advantage was then compounded when an Edina player was called for checking, and then ejected from the game after arguing with the referee. Taking advantage of having an extra two players on the ice, the Storm buzzed the Hornets’ net, with Best eventually tapping a loose puck past Edina goalie Ramsey Bell to tie the game and send it to OT.

Then two minutes into the Overtime, Best slammed home a loose puck in a scrum in front of the Edina net, touching off a frenzied celebration from the Minneapolis bench. The win solidifies Minneapolis’s No. 1 ranking in the Youth Hockey Hub PWAA rankings. Opposing teams sure don’t need a reminder.

Players to Watch: Gavin Best was a beast for the Storm all weekend, not just in the Championship game...his quick feet and nose for the net were huge as the #1 Storm won the Moose. Rosemount has "The Moose" (Kyle Heffron), Minneapolis has The Mouse, Joe Miller. The ever so slight sixth grader is an incredible play maker who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Miller's constant squeaks for the puck or direction to his team earn him the tag of "The Mouse." Like his dad Mike, Emmet Wurst is not flashy, but he always seems to get the job done. At the Moose he scored important goals in both the semifinals and the finals. Kyle Kukkonen from Osseo Maple Grove had a great weekend...the kid really gets after it and is a playmaker for the Crimson.
