Section 3A opens Class A play with New Ulm #1 seed.

Class A Sectional play starts Tuesday, February 3, with two Section 3A quarterfinal games being played.  Section 6A seedings will not be known until Wednesday, but the other seven sectional seeding has been completed.  YHH ranked #1 Thief River Falls is the favorite to win Section 8A. Proctor/Hermantown is the Section 7A favorite.  But remaining six sections are toss-ups including Section 3A.  New Ulm is still the favorite to win their seventh straight trip to the Xcel, but they lost last week to Section 3A's #2 seed Luverne 5-4.  That loss tightens Section 3A.

No Class A sectional games were played Monday.  Two regular season games were played; Red Wing (Section 1A’s #1 seed) beat Tartan (Section 4AA’s #6 seed) 4-1 and Warroad pulled a mild upset beating Roseau at Roseau 4-3 in overtime knocking Section 8AA’s #1 seed out of the Greater Minnesota Conference title.  Warroad’s Demi Gardner scored the game winner.  It was Gardner’s third goal of the game.

Section 6A seeding will not be completed until Wednesday; Alexandria and Northern Lakes play their final regular season game tonight.  Two Class A quarterfinal games will be played Tuesday.  The #6 Worthington/Fulda travels to Marshall to play the #3 Tigers.  Worthington is led by 15 goal scorer senior Betsy Thompson and Marshall is led by 21 goal scorer senior Teegan Wyffels (31 points).  In the second quarterfinal game, #5 Windom Area plays at #4 Farimont.  Windom Area is led by ninth grader Addison Beaty with 14 points/5 goals.  Windom Area is a young team that has done reasonably well in the Big South this season and could be a future team to watch come out of Southwest Minnesota hockey.

Fairmont has been a surprise this year in the Big South placing fourth and posting an 11-9-0 in their 20 game season.  Despite playing just 20 games, the Cardinals have five, 20 point, players on their team (junior Brooke Lemon with 48 points/15 goals, junior defenseman Tieryn Arens with 41 points/22 goals, junior Logyn Cone 30 points/15 goals, junior Jalyssa Wilson 29 points/21 goals and sophomore Taylor Nuss 20 points/11 goals.  Fairmont is favored to beat Windom Area and if the Cardinals win they will play New Ulm in a semifinal game with the winner of that game favored to make the trip to Xcel.

Three regular season games are also played tonight involving Class A teams.  Orono (seeded #3 in Section 5A behind Blake and Breck) plays South St. Paul (seeded #2 in Section 4A behind St. Paul United); the St. Paul Blades (seeded #8 in Section 4A) plays Section 5A’s #8 seed Minneapolis; and Moose Lake Area (seeded #4 in Section 7A) plays Henry Sibley seeded #7 in Section 4A.
