Grand Rapids PWAA shuts out Brainerd...Brainerd shuts out DL

GR celebrates a goal Sunday

Sunday afternoon Youth Hockey Hub took in two afternoon matchups from Essentia Health Sports Center in Brainerd.  The first game was a Peewee AA rematch between the home town Brainerd Warriors and the Visiting Grand Rapids Thunderhawks.  For the second game  Detroit Lakes travelled to Brainerd for a Bantam B rematch of district 15 rivals.  In the Peewee AA game Brainerd was looking to avenge and earlier 6-0 loss earlier in the season to the Thunderhawks.  The Bantam B game gave us just the opposite matchup as the visiting Lakers were the team looking for revenge from an earlier loss to the host Warriors.  Both games presented us with matchups that we may see in the upcoming district 15 Bantam B tournament as well as in the Peewee AA North Region tournament.

Wyatt Miskovich tips in a goal Sunday for GR

Grand Rapids showed little sign of jet lag from their journey south as they hit the ice flying and put the pressure on Brainerd from the get go.  The Thunderhawks aggressive forecheck and early pressure put Brainerd on its heels early in the game.  Eventually this pressure led to a Brainerd penalty and Hunter Bischoff had no problem making Brainerd pay for this mistake with his unassisted goal that put Grand Rapids up early.  Brainerd settled in after the Thunderhawk goal and created several scoring chances of its own and it looked as if they would have a chance to revenge their earlier loss.  After back and forth play Brainerd was called for three consecutive penalties putting Grand Rapids on the power play that eventually gave the Thunderhawks a 5 on 3 advantage.  This time it was Braeden Hocomb who found the back of the net with Hunter Bischoff and Kodi Miller collecting the assist and giving Grand Rapids a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Brainerd played with energy and effort all day and that was apparent throught the second period as both teams battled for that all important third goal of the game.  Brainerd was solid in their defensive end fending of Grand Rapids attack however Grand Rapids was equal to the task as they limited Brainerd to 4 second period shots.  Grand Rapids forecheck paid off again midway through the second when they gained control in the corner passed the puck to the point and Kodi Miller's shot was tipped in by Wyatt Miskovich.  That would be all of the scoring in the second and Grand Rapids would go to the third period holding a 3-0 lead.

Brainerd came out for the third determined to not go quietly.  Brainerd was able to mount some pressure in the third period aided by three Grand Rapid penalties.  Grand Rapids solid play in the defensive zone and Carter Clafton's solid play in goal kept Brainerd from being able to capitalize on all three power play attempts.  Grand Rapids' Dawson Broberg finished the scoring for the Thuderhawks when he turned a Brainerd miscue into a goal with assists going to Braeden Holcomb and Hunter Bischoff.  In the end Grand Rapids skated away with a solid 4-0 win outshooting Brainerd 39-20.

Jared Marthaler scores for Brainerd Sunday

Eli Sundquist and the rest of his Warrior teamates wasted little time in establishing themselves as the dominant team in the rematch.  Sundquist was able to take a Ben Jones pass off a face off in the Laker zone skate in and put the puck by the Laker's goalie giving Brainerd a 1-0 lead 15 seconds into this contest.  This early goal gave Brainerd a noticeable jump and Brainerd applied constant pressure the rest of the game.  The Lakers were resiliant in their defensive zone as goalie Ben Boomgaarden turned away shot after shot until Isaiah Boberg was abe to tip in a shot from the point late in the period on a power play putting Brainerd up 2-0 at the end of one.  Boomgaarden finished the period with 15 saves for the Lakers.

The second period seemed to be a replay of the first as Brainerd attacked the Lakers shift after shift but Boomgaarder and his Laker teamates fended the Warriors off shot after shot  however the Lakers  were unable to muster any attack of their own.  The only scoring of the period came when Brainerd entered the zone 2 on 2 got the puck to the net and Jared Erickson was able to convert in the ensuing scramble in front of the net with Andrew Roth collecting the assist.  Boomgaarden and his teammates however were able to keep the Warriors at bay for the remainder of the period and entering the third only down 3-0 still had a chance.

Brainerd's Jared Erickson got things rolling for the Warriors early in the third as he tipped in a shot from the point putting Brainerd up 4-0.  Nicholas Hastings and Jared Marthaler would also tally for Brainerd in the third giving them a 6-0 District 15 win.  In the end Brainerds, size, speed, deeper bench, and relentless offensive attack wore Detroit Lakes down depite a great effort in goal by Ben Boomgaarden who ended the day with 44 saves.
