#1 Spartans capitalize on opportunities, hold Edina scoreless in Bantam A

Edina Goalie Garrett Mackay stuffs Davey Burns Wednesday

Thomas Walker shot beats Edina Goalie Garrett Mackay.

On Wednesday night, Orono traveled to Edina to show why their 36-2-2 record and number 1 ranking was no fluke. Winners of 15 games in a row and without a loss in 2015, the Spartans jumped out early and established a physical dominance over Edina. They won races to the puck and consistently out battled the Hornets during 50-50  battles.

In the first period, Thomas Walker got a loose puck in the slot and had time to tee up his shot and buried his shot past a helpless Edina Goalie Garrett Mackay to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Later in the first, with Edina on its only power play of the game, Davey Burns got loose in the neutral zone and beat his defender who was skating side by side with Burns. Just as Burns got to the slot he beat Mackay with a snipe to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. A lead that would be safe the rest of the game.

Orono's Davey Burns finished with a goal and assist to help Orono knock off #2 Edina

Edina came into the game on a streak of their own. They had won 11 straight games and moved up to #2 in the Staff Rakings this week. In 37 games to date, Edina had never been shut out.

Late in the first, Edina took the first of three consecutive penalties. Six minutes of short handed time they couldn't afford being down 2-0. Fortunately for the Hornets, they were able to kill off all three penalties and leave the second period down only 2-0.

As the third period progressed, one hockey writer got a feeling that all the Hornets needed was a goal to make the game interesting. Especially considering the fact that Orono could have lead by even more than two goals. Edina had some chances to put a scare into Orono, but was unable to penetrate the Spartan defense for any real solid scoring opportunities the third period. The Hornets registered 5 shots on goal in the third, but only one really good chance on a bouncing puck in front. The Spartans played out the string in the final half of the third period keeping the puck deep in the Edina zone whenever possible and won 2-0.

Players to Watch

Davey Burns, Orono - second year multi-sport star - has great speed and puck control...had Goal and an Assist Wednesday.

Peter Colby, Edina - had a nice game Wednesday, showed great patience with the puck and vision to find open teammates.

Garrett Mackay, Edina - made some fantastic saves, killing the perception that the Edina association has no goaltending.

Thomas Walker, Orono - great skill for a big man, hurt the Hornets with all facets of his game Wednesday (puck possession, body contact, and shooting).

#1 Orono celebrates their second goal and an early 2-0 lead.
