The Drama Continues in District 3

North Metro came that close to winning the D3 Title on Thursday.

Game 1: Orono wins in OT

Eric Ittel knocks home the GWG for the Spartans Thursday

Thursday night at Maple Grove Community Center two important District 3 Bantam B games took place. The first pitted Orono against Wayzata Gold for the final spot into the MN Hockey Regionals. The second was for the District 3 Playoff Champion and number 1 seed into the next round in Buffalo.

Game 1 was a see saw low scoring battle with no team truly gaining a prohibitive advantage the whole game. Zach Adams scored in the first period for Orono and Nick Gardner got a power play goal in the second making the third period a do or die period with winner heading to Regions and the loser heading home.

During the last week, District 3 has become well known for exciting and dramatic finishes. Single overtimes, Double overtimes and a game that went 8 overtimes and needed to finish the game the next day!

Keeping the standard high for drama, this Region play in game went to overtime. Both teams getting great chances. On one such chance, Zach Adams got the puck alone down low and fed Eric Ittel in the slot and he one timed the puck in for the game winning goal to send the Spartans to the Regions in Buffalo.

Game 2: Wayzata's Bergsland get GWG in 2OT

Blake Ask with one of his 2 Goals Thursday

The second game of the night pitted two teams that had already qualified for Regions and were playing less for their lives as had Orono and Wayzata Gold, but more for pride, number YHH Staff Ranking in Minnesota, and most important the District 3 Playoff championship title.

Both teams came out flying trying to set the tone with their speed and physical play. Both teams threw a few figurative punches, but neither gained a distinct advantage. Both teams had a few chances, but they mostly wasted energy they would likely need later.

Mitchell Maier scores on a tip in for North Metro

Justin Ohnstad would get the scoring started for North Metro. After sustained pressure in the Wayzata zone, Ohnstad got a loose puck in the slot after an odd deflection and he beat an out of position Danny Fraga for 1-0 lead. Fraga got caught going one way as a result of the puck redirection. Wayzata's Blake Ask would not ask, he would answer for the Trojans...he got a puck in the slot and would wrist it home to tie it at 1-1 after 1.

Early in the second, Wayzata began to take control of the game. They won races to the puck and owned the Pirate zone getting constant pressure. Ask left no doubt who number 13 was scoring again from the slot to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead. Wayzata continued to pressure. With four minutes and change left in the second, Zach Giesler went coast to coast and finished with a top shelf backhand to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead and all the momentum. As we tweeted during the game, North Metro just needed to get out of the second period only down 3-1...and they did.

The third period was slightly more even, but Wayzata was getting more chances and was more than content up 3-1. With five minutes to go in the game Wayzata got called for Cross Checking. North Metro capitalized on the Power Play and scored on a nice tip in by Mitchell Maier to cut the lead to 3-2. The Maier goal energized North Metro, they began winning the races and taking the play to Wayzata. With three minutes to go, the Pirate aggressiveness backfired and were called for Roughing. Very bad timing for a team that was poised at this point tie the score.

Ryan Suggs ties the score for North Metro with a minute left

Despite being down a man, North Metro still was the aggressor. Pirate speedster Ryan Suggs got loose and cut to the slot and fired a far side wrist shot that beat Fraga to send the boisterous North Metro crowd into a frenzy. Neither team would score in regulation or the first overtime. Both getting great chances.

In the second OT, North Metro had a shot from the slot barely glance of traffic and fool Frago and nearly crossed the goal line. At the last second, a Wayzata defenseman swept it away keeping the game tied at 3. In the secod Overtime, they played 4 on 4 hockey, opening up the ice for even better scoring chances and odd man rushes.

The Trojans converted on their chance when Tommy Bergsland jumped the play, got a loose puck in front and got the GWG.
