Late Luke Paterson Goal the Difference for the Trojans

Wayzata's Alex Schilling had a 20 Save Shutout Thursday for the Trojans

Between a case of the sniffles and the sweat running down his face, Wayzata junior Luke Paterson looked like exhaustion personified. And after Thursday night’s 1-0 Class 2A, Section 6 quarterfinal victory over Lake Conference rival Hopkins, no one could blame him. Paterson scored with 1:10 remaining in regulation, snapping a low shot past No. 6-seeded Hopkins (12-12-2) senior goaltender Josh Kuehmichel to give the No. 3-seeded Trojans the 1-0 advantage.

Fellow junior forward Max Zimmer stole the puck from a Hopkins defender and expertly slid a pass to linemate Paterson on a two-on-one for the winning tally. “I was thinking ‘the next shot I get I’m going to throw it low’,” Paterson said after the win. “Obviously, it paid off,” Paterson added with a grin.

Wayzata coach Pat O’Leary said that the “shooting low” thoughts that danced in Paterson’s head were planted by design.

O’Leary referred to the last meeting between the team’s, a 3-3 tie on Feb. 14, as evidence that the Trojans needed to change their shooting habits against Kuehmichel. “Last Saturday we played (Kuehmichel) and we had fifty shots on net,” O’Leary said. “Thirty went into his glove.” “That was the first thing (the team) talked about was to keep (their shots) off his glove,” O’Leary continued.

This game was different in terms of shots, with the Trojans outshooting the Royals 35-20 during the game, giving Trojans’ junior goaltender Alex Schilling his third overall shutout of the season.

Paterson’s goal was his ninth of the season, and Zimmer’s assist makes him the leading scorer for the Trojans (12-11-3), with 21 assists and 29 points. The Trojans will now march on to face No. 2 seed Minnetonka in Saturday’s Section 6-2A semifinals.
