Wayzata PWA advances on Tucker Ness Double OT Goal

Tucker Ness with the Goal and the Celly for the Trojans

Armstrong Cooper's Jack Campion had 1G/1A on Saturday

The third Saturday of February marks the day where at least half of the teams in MN youth hockey have ended their season. By Sunday, where only a select few have a ticket to ride into the Youth Regionals.

YHH caught up to a pivotal PeeWee A matchup between Armstrong Cooper and Wayzata. The winner would earn a spot into the West Regional in Monticello, the loser would be done for the season.

Armstrong Cooper came into the game the #4 seed and on their ninth life after a first round win in overtime over #5 seed Wayzata, a crushing triple overtime loss to Orono on Sunday and win over Delano Thursday. The Trojans came into the Saturday game with a loss to AC and wins over Hopkins and #3 seed Mound Westonka.

Armstrong took control of the game and got the only goal of the first period when AC sharp shooter Jack Campion scored. The second period the ice was slanted in AC's favor as well, they got a power play goal from Ben Anderson on a feed from Jack Campion (one of three Campion cousins to don the AC uniform on Saturday). At this point of the game, the game lacked the typical District 3 playoff intrigue and drama that has unfolded all week long.

Late in the second, the Wings would get a third goal that would put them into a comfortable three goal lead. The referee would wave off the goal and call AC for a man in the crease. No harm, no foul...the second period would end with the Wings up 2-0. After the ice scrape, Armstrong would continue their strong play holding the smaller Wayzata team to the edges in the defensive zone and an aggressive forecheck in the Trojan end. Halfway through the third, Wayzata would get a pretty goal by Charlie Podiak to make it 2-1. Podiak would beat one man in the high slot and then he beat AC goalie Lachlan Kaiser to his glove side.

With 5:21 to go in the game, Armstrong would score an apparent insurance goal that would give them a 3-1 lead. A wrist shot from the point fooled Wayzata Goalie Darby Sanders. The puck would catch his shoulder and slowly drop down his back and into the net. The ref would mysteriously wave off the goal citing that he lost sight of the puck. An alarming call at a crucial stage in the game.

Tucker Ness scores to lift Wayzata to the Double Overtime Win

One neutral observer said to YHH, "that call will haunt Armstrong...just watch." He was right. Two minutes later, Wayzata was on the attack to tie it. With the puck bouncing in front of the AC net, Wayzata's Hayden Davison got his stick on it and shoveled it in to tie the score with 2:28 to go in the game. The game would end in a tie and the next goal in sudden death overtime would send one team to Regions and the other home for the rest of the season.

In the first overtime, both teams had golden opportunities to win it. Wayzata had a point blank opportunity in transition stuffed by Kaiser. Armstrong's Jack Campion rifled a missile off the crossbar that came down outside the goal line for the win.

The game would head to a second overtime. Both teams fought and in more ways than one they battled. With the referees not calling any penalties, the fans began to grow into a lather and the game began to look more like wrestling than hockey.

With less than a minute to go, Tucker Ness fired a shot from the point that hit Kaiser and snuck past him for the win...setting off fireworks for the Trojans and sorrow for the Wings. An incredible game played by both teams. A shame that one had to lose.

Jack Campion's shot goes bar down and out for the potential win for AC.
