Notes on the great weekend of Hockey

Minneapolis Goalie Kiron Morioka stops EP's Johnny Mittelstadt Saturday.

Who is Going to State? WE ARE GOING to STATE!!!

There are a lot of fun parts to writing about youth hockey, but easily the most fun is being in the Winner's Circle. This weekend we saw a lot of winning and a lot of teams excited to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

Overheard in one locker room this weekend. The chant of, "Who is going to State?" Followed by "We are going to State!!!" Followed by screams and yells. Brings chills to this writer to see such joy after a season of hard work and ups and downs.

PeeWee AA Madness

Duluth East is headed to State

To begin the weekend at PeeWee AA there were a few teams that seemed poised to go to state. Edina was the top team for the middle part of the season and #2 seed into Regions...they were eliminated Sunday morning by Elk River. Osseo Maple Grove and White Bear Lake were the #4 and #5 seeds in the Metro, they didn't even make it to Sunday. Two more surprises unfolded as well. Blaine was the sixth seed in the South, they lost to Minnetonka and Eden Prairie over the weekend. And North Favorite Moorhead lost in a heartbreaker to Cloquet in the Championship and then to Duluth East Sunday in Brainerd.

That is just the teams that lost. The top seed in the Metro, Minneapolis, lost to St. Cloud Sunday, but were able to knock off Eden Prairie to advance to State.

Chaska Chan beat rival Prior Lake in triple overtime to claim their spot in the state tourney. The StormHawks were a team YHH had in our Staff Top 10 all season, despite a polished record.

Speaking of Prior Lake, the Lakers fought through the meat grinder of the East Region and claimed a spot to state. On Friday they beat Elk River in a #4/#5 seed game, then beat Edina on Saturday. On Sunday, after losing to CC they had to beat Elk River for the second time. The Elks were coming off a big win over Edina and the Lakers were coming off a very tough loss to CC.

The B's were buzzzing

Wayzata Blue punched their ticket to state Sunday

So many great B teams faced off this weekend for a shot at the state tourney glory.

PeeWee B: The West Region took the cake (okay, every post needs a bad pun, right?)...Orono Blue/White took down Edina Green/White to start the tourney and eventually the two associations canabalized each other, Edina White beating Green on the left side on Saturday, Orono White beating Orono Blue on Sunday and finally Edina White beating Orono Blue to go to state.

Bantam B: The top teams shined this weekend. Wayzata Blue and Elk River Black were really impressive. Moorhead knocked off D15 rival Brainerd to punch a ticket out of the North...the Warriors fought back and beat LOW to qualify for Rochester. Sibley makes another late season run in Bantam B and qualifies for State, beating D8 rival Woodbury in a Play-In game.

12B: The Bloomington Bears take second in the National Region and qualify for state.

OMG, they played 3 on 3?

An interesting tale unfolded Sunday night in Lakeville. Osseo Maple Grove and Prior Lake were playing to go to state in Bantam AA. The rules for Regionals can be confusing because there are two sets of Overtime Rules. One for the nine games that don't send a team to state and another for the two games that do. In this case, the two teams used the first set of Overtime rules and played 5 on 5 in the first OT, 4 on 4 in the second. They resurfaced and then played 3 on 3 where Osseo Maple Grove won on a Trevor Janicke goal to send the Crimson to state.

Page 30/31 of the MN Hockey Handbook States:

1. If the score is tied at the end of the regulation play in region or state tournament games, the teams shall not change goals and sudden victory overtime play shall ensue using the following format. a. A two minute rest, then a first overtime period – ten minutes – five on five b. A two minute rest, then a second overtime period – five minutes – four on four (page 31) c. Resurface the ice, then conduct additional ten-minute overtime periods - three on three - followed by two-minute rests. In the event of a penalty, the non-penalized team would be allowed a fourth player (four on three). The penalized player (or player serving the penalty) would return to the ice when the penalty is over, and four on four play would continue until there is a stoppage of play, at which time three on three would resume.

2. Exception: For State Tournament final (first-place) games and region games which are either firstplace games or games that seed teams directly to the state tournament, the following overtime format shall be used. The teams shall not change goals during the entire overtime. a. A two minute rest, then a first sudden-victory overtime period – ten minutes – five on five b. A two minute rest, then a second sudden-victory overtime period – ten minutes – five on five c. Resurface the ice, then conduct additional ten-minute sudden-victory overtime periods, as needed, five on five, with two-minute rests between periods and resurfacing after every three periods. This plan of play shall continue until one team scores.

Bantam Boredom

The Bantam AA Regions had far fewer upsets and a lot less drama than their younger brother PeeWees. Elk River (#4) and Prior Lake (#6) did not qualify as top seeds in the Metro. The top two teams in the North (Moorhead and Grand Rapids) advanced.

Moorhead won the Region. Rapids needed a goal with under two minutes to go to tie Roseau and then beat them with 9 seconds left to keep their hopes alive. The ThunderHawks then beat Brainerd and Cloquet Sunday to punch their ticket.

Jefferson lost on Friday in the first round and then accomplished the impossible and won four straight. Two years ago St. Cloud did it in PeeWees and Detroit Lakes in Bantams.  They beat Rosemount, Rochester, St. Cloud and then Eden Prairie to punch their ticket. Luke Loheit got the game winning goal for Tonka to send them to state on Sunday.

Centennial beat Prior Lake in a rematch of the Eden Prairie tournament in November. OMG fought through the left side of the bracket beating Sibley, Minneapolis, and then Prior Lake in triple overtime.

Edina took care of business and won the East...taking out Wayzata. The loss forced Wayzata into the unenviable job of playing Eastview. Eastview, a team they had defeated on Saturday. A team that they had developed a nice bond with over the season as a result of the loss of Patrick Schoonover. One team was going to go home, one would end their season. The Trojans won 5-1, ending a great post season for the Lightning.

Okay, the Bantams weren't that boring after all.

The Jefferson Daily Double

Devan Bientema scores for the Jags in their 3-2 win over EP Sunday

How about Jefferson? The only association to claim a spot in both the Bantam and PeeWee AA State Tourney. A distinction usually reserved for youth royalty like Edina, Duluth East or White Bear Lake.

The Bantams held on to beat Eden Prairie Sunday in their Play-In Game. Evan Redepenning made 25 Saves and Hunter Jacobs got the Game Winning Goal to send the Jags to Duluth. The PeeWees got a goal from Martin Olson in the final minute to tie Wayzata and then Grant Ellings scored the game winning goal on the first shift of OT to lift his team to State.
