Class A opens with a nice Crowd at the Xcel

The Mahtomedi hockey fans have supported their team well all season.  Wednesday afternoon they cheered their Zephys on to a 6-3 win over a stubborn New Ulm team behind a hat trick by Zephyr’s Jack Becker.  The Zephyrs fans roared as Becker scored; they finally were in an arena that would hold them all comfortably.

Mahtomedi's Jack Gunderson, sans glove, scores to put the Zephyrs' up 1-0 in the first period.

The Zephyrs opened play with a short passing game that they used consistently throughout the game.  Their quick puck movements in the neutral zone beat the Eagles defense just enough to allow the Mahtomedi forwards to get the angle on the Eagle defenders and open up the driving and passing lanes to attack the New Ulm net.  The Eagles offense countered the Zephyrs with a quick strike offense that found their skaters often in the open with a longer pass from neutral ice or the boards.  In the end, it was two New Ulm defensive miscues that led to the Mahtomedi win.

The game started evenly.  Both teams had their chances.  It was Mahtomedi's Jack Gunderson who got the opening goal halfway through the first period.  Gunderson one timed a rebound he picked up in the slot in front of the New Ulm net beating the Eagles goalie Matt Berkner.  Andrew Kangas and Sam Krawczyk got the assists.  Ninety seconds later New Ulm tied the game when the Eagles’ Ethan Kraus one timed a neat pass from Brandon Helget in the net from the left slot.   Helget’s pass hit Kraus in stride for the quick score.  Mahtomedi continued to press the Eagle’s in the New Ulm continuing to beat the Eagle defense crossing the New Ulm blue line setting up 2-on-1 rushes.  The Zephyrs had a number of good shots from the slot, but could not beat New Ulm goalie Matt Berkner.  The period ended in a 1-1 tie.  Mahtomedi outshot New Ulm 16-4 in the period.

New Ulm's Matt Bender makes the stop on this shot by Mahtomedi.

A New Ulm defensive miscue opened the second period.  The Eagles controlled the faceoff, getting the puck to their defenseman in the right Eagles’ faceoff circle.  The Eagle defender misfired on a pass across the slot in the New Ulm zone.  The Zephyr’s Jack Becker intercepted the soft pass and beat Berkner for the score.  Becker's score broke the tie giving Mahtomedi a 2-1 lead with 10 seconds gone in the middle period.  Four minutes later in the second period, the New Ulm defense made their second mistake and gave up an unusual goal.  This time Mahtomedi’s Kellen Campbell got the breakaway.  Skating down the Eagles left slot, Campbell’s shot from the top of the crease was stopped by Berkner.  Campbell veered right and the trailing Eagle defender crash the net driving Berkner and the puck into the net for the score.  Campbell’s score was unassisted.  Mahtomedi led 3-1.

The Zephyrs killed a penalty and with seven minutes left in the period attacked the New Ulm goal.  But this time, the Zephyrs defense was lax.  They were beaten by New Ulm’s Helget to a sliding puck at the Eagles’ blue line.  Helget took off hitting the slot in the Zepher’s zone and putting a shot on the Mahtomedi goalie Will Swanson.  Swanson made the stop with Helget drawing a Zephyr penalty, but a trailing Eagle put the puck in the net.  The play was ruled dead on the initial stop.

Mahtomedi drew another penalty at the four minute mark.  This time, the Zephyr’s Becker scored the shorthanded goal off melee around the Eagles’ net.  Mahtomedi led 4-1 with three minutes to go in the period.  In the last minute of the second period, the Eagles got life when Jon Kopacek beat the Zephyr defense.  Crossing the blue line right, Kopacek put a shot on Swanson and beat the Zephyr defender low left to the rebound.  Kopeck backhanded the rebounding puck past Swanson for the score cutting the Mahtomedi lead to 4-2 as the period ended.  New Ulm outshot Mahtomedi 12-9 in the second period aided by three Zephyr penalties.

Forty seconds into the third period, New Ulm scored to cut the Zephyr lead to 4-3.  Colin Huffman scored for the Eagles with Kraus getting the assist.  New Ulm’s defense adjusted to the Mahtomedi passing game in the third period.  The two teams played even until the nine minute mark.  Then a simple faceoff to the left of the Eagles goal resulted in the puck going to Mahtomedi’s Jack Gunderson.  Gunderson put a quick hard shot on Berkner scoring when the puck bounced over Berkner’s left shoulder and into the net.  It was Gunderson’s second goal of the game.  The Zephyrs led 5-3.  Kangas got his second assist in the game.  With less than four minutes to play, a New Ulm penalty resulted in Becker getting his hat trick.  Becker beat the Eagle defense going to the right slot and beat Berkner on a hard shot low right to put Mahtomedi up 6-3 to end the scoring.  Mahtomedi outshot the Eagles 12-9 in the second period.
