Moorhead's Grant Connelly scores for the Spuds Saturday.
Edina beat Moorhead 4-3 in the Minnesota State Bantam Semifinals at Heritage Sports Center in Duluth. Bjorn Swanson's late Power Play Goal lifted the Hornets into the Finals after Moorhead had fought back from a 3-0 deficit.
The Hornets scored the first three goals of the game (Tabor PP, Koumontzis - ESG and Crosby SHG), a game that looked to be a route. Edina had a 3 goal lead, more scoring chances and prohibitive lead in the Shots on Goal category.
But the Spuds answered the call. Bantam Player of the Year finalist Carter Randklev scored immediately after the Crosby shorty to cut the lead to 3-1 and second year Bantam Grant Connelly cut the lead to 3-2 on a nifty back hander. In the third, Randklev got a Power Play goal five minutes in to tie it and Seitz Arena was going crazy.
Both teams traded body blows (and trips and slashes) in the third period. With the Spuds in the box, and the Edina second PP unit in the zone. Edina's Jack Jensen got a loose puck and held Moorhead Goalie long enough until he slid it back door to Swanson who buried it for the game winner.
Edina will face District 6 Rival Minnetonka Sunday for a chance to win their third Bantam A/AA title in four years. Minnetonka has never won a State Bantam A/AA title and this will be the Association's first trip to the Finals since 1980.
