Tartan's Brock Bertelsen scores for the '02 East Team Sunday
Minnesota Select teams East and West took to the ice Sunday at the Herb Brooks NHC to decide championships for the 2002 and 2003 brackets. Team West jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then finished strong to thwart a late West comeback bid in the 2003 game. While the 2002 East team aided by a disallowed goal skated away with a 3-2 win.
03 Recap: Team East jumped out to a 3-0 lead got two, two goal performances by Isak Nightingale and Cody Croal were to able hang on and defeat team West 6-3 in the 2003 Championship game. White Bear's Tanner Domschot got things started for the East scoring on the power play and then got breakaway goals by Nightingale and Croal to go up 3-0. Team West did not give up and got back into the mix when Blake Johnson and Brandon Reller tallied the next two goals of the game to trim team East's lead to one. Conner Smith netted the next goal of the game pushing East's lead back to two. Zachary Miller responded for the West to draw within one, however Croal's second goal of the game followed by Nighingale's empty netter gave Team East a 6-3 win over Team West.

02 Recap: In the the 2002 Championship game Team West got off to a 1-0 lead when Zach Michaelis' wrist shot found the back of the net. Brock Bertelsen tallied on a rebound goal for the East to even things up and Scott Nelson tip in goal of off Cole Carpenter's shot gave the East a 2-1 lead after one period of play. Johnston Meiers put the East up 3-1 when he took the puck off a faceoff in the West's zone and deposited the puck into the back of the net. Logan Stellmach talled for the West getting them back to within 1. Team West thought they had this game tied up with a powerplay goal however the officials waived the goal off. The final five minutes of this game proved to be very exciting as both teams opened things up and had excellant scoring opportunities, however no pucks were able to find the back of the net and Team East was able to cling to a 3-2 win.
