Board Member says, "We'd be foolish not to."

Jake Hankinson was no fool with the puck last month for Edina.

Edina High School has won 12 state championships and dozens more youth titles at the PeeWee, Bantam, Girls and Junior Gold level. After years of domination as one association, Edina Hockey Association has unanimously voted to split into two evenly balanced associations beginning in the Winter of 2015. Edina likely felt it was better served to split into an East and West association to give more hockey players in the city the ability to play at the appropriate level.

Instead of Green and White teams at the Youth levels, Edina players on the West side of Highway 100 will compete for the West and those East will don the East jersey replicating the former East and West boundaries of the city's high schools in the 1970s and early 80s.

The Edina Hockey Association released a brief statement Thursday stating, "In an effort to meet the demands of our hockey playing community, we felt it necessary to divide our program into two, to help promote the game and meet the needs of our hockey development." One anonymous board member told YHH, "we'd be foolish not to."

Many think that the move will water down the strong pool of players into less dominant teams of the recent past. YHH says that this move will only grow the high school program into even a stronger juggernaut than it already is.
