'02's take center stage at the Warrior Cup

Patrick Fontaine with a great save Friday

Nearly 90 teams took the ice Friday at the Warrior Cup in rinks all over the greater metro area. YHH took in a few of those games on Friday, all at the '02 Invite level at Braemar in Edina. It didn't take long to for us to find one of the best '02 hockey players in the US in Ty Smilanic from the Colorado Kodiaks. The Kodiaks won a hard fought 6-2 game over Breakaway. Breakaway hung tough, getting goals by Braedon Lacomy and Gavin Brown. But this game featured a host of Colorado stars including Smilanic and a defenseman named Cole Stofflet who had two beautiful snipes from the blue line.

Orono's Spencer Lewin scores for Velocity Friday

In the other two '02 games we took in, the '02 Magicians outlasted the MN Flames 6-3. Nick Speltz and Tyler Davidson lead the Magic. Elk River's Bjorn Franke had a pair of goals for the Flames. In the nightcap match, Velocity and the Icemen faced off between two of the top teams in the field. It was a highly entertaining back and forth game. Both teams played a very physical style...showcasing a great ability to use the body for kids so new to checking. The score ended in a 4-4 tie. With the score tied at 3 to start the third, Apple Valley's Jared Wright got loose for the Icemen and beat Velocity Goalie Mason Wordleman for a 4-3 lead. In the middle of the third, Orono's Spencer Lewin got the equalizer on a rocket slap shot, his second of the game.

In other '02 Invite action, Warrior beat Euro Blue 3-2 in their first Pool Play game Friday. The Lake Superior Stars got past WI Pride 5-3, Blake Biondi had a 1G/2A for the Stars. Miracle Gold flexed their muscles and beat the Ice Clams 8-2 to go 1-0 in Pool Play.

06 Invite: Carter Kucera had 2G for the Magic in a 4-2 win over the CO Kodiaks. They head into Saturday undefeated.

05 Invite: Joe Rice had 2G for the Magicians in their 6-1 win over Breakaway...the two out of towners, made themselves at home..Kodiaks won 3-2 over Velocity and the Northern Wings beat Tommy Chicago's 6-0.

04 Invite: A very competitive field that promises to have a lot of close games, especially into bracket play. Hometown and Miracle off to good starts.

03 Invite: Miracle Gold is the prohibitive favorite for a reason. Joe Greniuk is a man amongst boys for the Gold, he had 2G/1A on Friday in their 6-1 win.

01 Invite: Euro and Tommy game was a doozy, last minute goal to tie it for Euros...Kodiaks could be the class of this level.

Joe Greniuk nabs some top cheese Friday for Miracle Gold.
