Lincoln selects Ryan Poehling with the number 1 pick in the USHL Futures Draft

The United States Hockey League (USHL) held its Phase I Futures Draft Monday night. The sixteen team league had 10 Rounds of selections. Prior to the draft, the US National Development team selected 20 of the top US born '99 players. In addition to those 20, a handful opted out of the USHL into the Canadian Hockey League. What was left over after those 20+, were then tendered by clubs in lieu of choosing a player in that spot during Monday's Draft. If a team tenders a player, they must play that player the following season at least 55% percent of the games he is healthy. Some teams chose both players prior to the draft, while others built for the future.

Lakeville's Ryan Poehling was selected first overall by the Lincoln Stars setting up the most long awaited trade talk since the 1991 NHL Draft and trade of Eric Lindros. Lindros said prior to the draft that he wouldn't want to play in Quebec. Poehling was likely hoping to be drafted by Green Bay number 2 and play with his brothers. Both Lincoln and Poehling said the right things publicly about the draft, but anyone remotely close to either situation knows a trade will someday occur between the two clubs to reunite the threesome in Green Bay.

Five of the first 12 picks of the Draft were Minnesota players and nine of the first 32, including 3 Freshmen (Clay Phillips - Edina, Mike Anderson - Hill Murray and Chase Hartje - Bemidji).

The '99 class was a very strong class of Minnesota players, landing three members the US National team and twenty percent of the Phase I portion of the USHL draft.
