Recently, Frederick61 posted a great article about the coming NHL Draft. In the article, he listed 10 great MN born players that will likely get drafted. Here are 10 players we've seen, most MN born, some with Minnesota ties that will likely garner the attention of the NHL this weekend.
Over time we see a lot of hockey in the Upper Midwest from Squirts to Juniors...some players we have the good fortune of seeing from the beginning to the pros. Others, we only see once or twice. Here are ten players we think will ether be drafted this weekend or has a shot at the show someday.
East Grand Forks Colton Poolman will line up for UND this Fall.
Colton Poolman, East Grand Forks (Fargo, USHL) - bigger defenseman (6.1, 195) who can skate and shoot the puck. Is headed to UND in the Fall.
Evan Smith, Austin Bruins - bigger goalie, often compared to Ben Bishop. Was a late bloomer. NHL scouts were in Austin all winter and we are guessing it wasn't for the Spam.
Hayden Shaw, Woodbury (Dubuque, USHL) - very athletic blue liner who had 42 points last year for both Waterloo and Dubuque. Drew crowds of NHL scouts all year. Very likely will be drafted this week.
Ryan Zuhlsdorf, Edina (Sioux City, USHL) - YHH's Top Bantam in 2013, Zuhlsdorf is the complete package, projects to a 1/2 Defenseman at the University of Minnesota once he arrives in Dinkytown.
Will Borgen, Moorhead - the 6 foot 2 Defenseman is one of Bob Motzko's top recruits for 2016...he is ranked #114 by NHL Central Scouting. Great all around player who has size and grit.
Luke Jaycox, Warroad - another great defenseman from the northern part of the state...headed to Northern Michigan in 2016. Has great vision and a great compete level. Missed half of his Senior year due to injury.
Neal Pionk will head back home to Duluth to play his college hockey, will he be drafted this weekend?
Jack McNeely, Lakeville - had a great HS career for Lakeville North. Is headed to Nebraska Omaha this Fall. Saw him play for Tri City this Spring...is rated #208 by NHL Central Scouting.
Tyler Sheehy, Burnsville (Waterloo, USHL) - hard worker that always seems to produce. His 5 foot 10 frame may be the reason he is not rated by NHL Central Scouting. Will enroll at the U of M this Fall.
Neal Pionk, Hermantown (Sioux City, USHL) - had 48 points for Musketeers this year, which was tops in the USHL for Defensemen, will skate for UMD this year. Not rated by Central Scouting, but may be a good late round pick.
Jared Bethune, Warroad (Prince George, WHL) - Six foot one Center who has a ton of potential. Played two years of HS hockey in Warroad and was committed to UMD prior to leaving for the Western League. Has a solid future, will likely go undrafted unless a team takes a chance.
Adam Johnson from Hibbing will light the lamp this year for UMD
Adam Johnson from UMD was born in 1994 and was never drafted into the NHL. Each year, the Hibbing native has slowly become a budding star for Sioux City in the USHL. Last season, he lead the entire league in points and will head to Duluth to play for Hibbing native Scott Sandelin in the Fall.
Johnson is now an undrafted free agent and can sign with any professional team. Most NHL teams will watch him closely each year. He will enter UMD as a 21 year old Freshman and likely put up big points for the Dogs this season. If he has one or two seasons in the NCHC, look for Johnson to leave early.
