Wiz Wyatt Player of the Year Brock Faber scores in the '14 Squirtacular
On Wednesday, YHH received word from Andover Youth Hockey that they have agreed to host and sanction the 2016 YHH Squirtacular. The Squirtacular is the largest Squirt Tournament held in Minnesota and is fast becoming a destination for other top teams in the US to play. Due to a large US Figure Skating event held in Bloomington, YHH will move the event to the Schwan's Super Rink on the campus of the National Sports Center. Plans past 2016 for the Squirtacular are not yet determined.
This year the Squirtacular will host 32 A teams and 32 B teems from all over the Twin Cities, northern Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and states like Arizona, Ohio, Colorado, Illinois and California.
Over the past three years the Osseo Maple Grove Crimson have won the Squirt A title. In 2012, they ended Rosemount's undefeated season with a win. In 2013, Wiz Wyatt Award winner Brock Faber and his line mates Justin Janicke and Kyle Kukkonen beat powerhouse White Bear Lake for the repeat. And then last year Tyler Frederichs and his band of brothers won close game after close game to complete the three-peat.
Besides the great teams and energy in the building, the Squirtacular encourages pin trading at the event - we have seen some great pins over the years and most important great community building at the rink. Each year YHH live streams several games complete with play by play. All games will be live scored with stats tracked real time on our site as well as our YHH Tourney App.
Last year Woodbury's Drew Fischer scores to beat Prior Lake
There are so many great teams lining up this year at the Squirt A level from all over Minnesota. Word on the street is Champlin Park is the team to beat boasting a very talented core of players from last year and a great Squirt B team. Another team that will challenge OMG's quest for 4 is Mahtomedi, the Zephyrs will have all the tools to go even farther than their Quarterfinal finish last year. Two more local teams that will be stacked are Rosemount and host Andover. The Irish and Huskies return some very talented players and have stockpiles of young talent coming in from Mites and the SQB level. Speaking of talent, watch out for Woodbury...another association that is loaded at the younger levels. Attila Lippai is a very quick skater with great hands and scorer's touch. The Preds are another teams that are looking to get past the Quarterfinals this year.
Outstate teams to keep an eye on are Hermantown, Grand Rapids and Moorhead. Moorhead beat OMG in the Moose Goheen to end their nearly 100 game game unbeaten streak. The Spuds promise to be one of the best teams in the North this year. Hermantown also fell in the Final 8 last year and they won't be deep, but their top may be the best top in the state...watch out for the Hawks.
Rochester Fans Celebrate their Quarterfinal win over Edina last year
Registration is now open for this year's Squirtacular. In the first few weeks, registration and interest has been remarkable - organizations that were in last year have until August 15 to reserve their spot from last year. Like year's past, registrations taken after August 15, will be put in a lottery for selection this year. Teams registering an A team must register a B team to guarantee their spot.
