Brainer'd Cole Beyer scores for the Warriors Saturday
The teams are picked, the excitement is fresh and the play is still a little sloppy. Minnesota kicked off it's community based hockey this past weekend. Teams from the neighborhood taking on teams from the town across town or across the state.
They lined up in Hermantown, Brainerd, Duluth and Maple Grove. The pre-season rankings are now being used for a fish wrap.
Let's Go! Time to recap some games from around the state.
Hastings' Joe Benson scores for the Raiders Saturday on the backhand
Hastings and Brainerd met in a PWAA match-up on Saturday with Hastings skating away with a 5-3 win over the hometown Warriors. Both teams appeared rusty to start the game as Hastings had one game under its belt and this was Brainerd's first game of the young season. Both teams traded scoring chances and survived defensive zone misplays early in this one. Hastings however was able to get things rolling first when Jax Schauer scored on a well executed three on one break. The rest of the first period was back and forth and finished with Hastings holding on to a 1-0 lead.
Hastings seemed to shake the off season rust off a little faster than Brainerd and a quick second period goal by Ethan Hagen put Hastings up 2-0. Hastings was not done just yet, moments after the Hagen goal Joe Benson got the puck on his stick and beat Brainerd's goalie with a pretty backhand shot giving Hastings a 3-0 lead early in the second. The rest of the second would be a stalemate and end with Hastings leading 3-0.
With two periods of play under their belts and an intermission the Warriors took the ice for the third period hoping to cut into the Hastings lead. Brainerd's Cole Beyer scored his and the Warriors first goal of the season to trim Hastings lead to 3-1. After both teams traded scoring chances Hastings' Jonathon Peine took a cross ice pass, skated in and scored to put Hastings back up by three. Cole Beyer answered again for Brainerd with his second of the game to keep the Warriors within striking distance with plenty of time remaining. Brainerd seemed to be gaining some momentum when Hastings Joe Benson took control of a lose puck in his own end and flipped the puck to center ice where Jonathon Peine beat a Brainerd player to the puck, skated down ice and beat the goaltender once again, stretching the Hasting lead to three. Eric Stoxen would score a late goal for Brainerd to cut the lead to 5-3 but it was too little too late and Hastings skated away with the win.

EP's Cooper Czech stops Kyle Kukkonen on the breakaway.
The Pre-Season number one team in Minnesota, the Osseo Maple Grove Leafbirds hit the ice Saturday against number 3 Eden Prairie. Prior to the game it was thought that OMG would have to find a way to contain star forward Drew Holt in order to come out ahead. Holt, a very strong skater with a wicked shot for the Eagles is the type of skater who can score five goals if left undetected.
Holt was a threat on Saturday, but didn't have enough to stop the Leafbirds on his own. OMG brought three really fast lines lead by top line Brock Faber, Justin Janicke, and Kyle Kukkonen on Saturday. On many shifts, OMG was really clicking - great puck movement was their calling card to lead them to an easy 8-2 victory. Another strong group for OMG Saturday was the line of Sam Jacobs, Chris Kernan and Grant Zick. They accounted for three goals Saturday, but more important they accounted for an energy level that EP could not sustain for three periods.
Sam Jacobs scores one of his two goals Saturday
OMG lead 2-0 after one and seemed in complete control. Both goals were by top liners...the first was by Faber on a pretty tic tac toe power play goal. The second was snipe by Kukkonen who returned the "Faber" when Brock slid one to his linemate fro the goal.
After going up 3-0 in the second, EP got on the board when a Carter Batchelder shot found it's way past Jack Wieneke to make it 3-1. But that is the closest the Eagles would come the rest of the day. OMG would rip off five of the next six goals and cruise to an 8-2 win. Sam Jacobs and Faber both finished with two goals and assist for the Leafbirds. Holt did not disappoint, he got in on the action on both EP goals netting 1G/1A.
Both teams head north next weekend in their quest for The Big Pumpkin. OMG is the defending champion - they will likely be tested by the likes of Edina, Eden Prairie and a handful of other very suitable foes next weekend. EP will be in every game this year. They are deep on the blue line and have three of four very gifted fowards who can fill up the net with rubber.
