Sam Wilhite scores for EP in their OT loss to Rosemount
The AA teams lined up for eight games Friday in their quest to win the blue cow. Some had high hopes for Sunday, some had hopes to scare a top team and others simply were hoping to take care of business.
Upset Special: Unranked Rosemount played hungry and beat top 10 Eden Prairie on Friday. Mitchell Kohner scored with 1:45 left in the game to tie and and Mason Wheeler netted the game winner on the first shift of overtime to lift the Irish into the final eight against Wayzata.
The other higher seeds won Friday. Osseo Maple Grove got all they could handle from Lakeville South...winning 3-2. Cloquet spotted Prior Lake a goal before they poured it on to win 4-1. Jon Baker had two goals for the Jacks.
Other winners included the top two seeds Minnetonka and Blaine, the beat Centennial and Bemidji going away. Wayzata beat the mystery team Fargo 6-3, Moorhead came to town to prove how strong they are. They beat Elk River 5-2. And Stillwater held off a late push by Eagan to win 3-2. Joe Raleigh had three goals for the Ponies.

The A Bracket had a couple of choice cut games Friday. Spring Lake Park and Alexandria both were state tournament teams two years ago, they locked horns and the Panthers won 5-2...Star Creighton McMahon had 2G/2A for the Panthers. Nikki Hartnett stopped 18 of 19 shots to lead Armstrong Cooper to their second win and Austin Kuebelbeck had the game winner for the Wings. AC clinched a spot in the semifinals with the win.
The most exciting game pitted host OMG A and Edina A on Friday. Brae Bartoo scored with 16 seconds remaining to help the Leafbirds earn a tie with Edina. Bartoo fired a laser that went bar down in the waning seconds. Mahotmedi flexed its AA muscle and knocked off the scrappy Pine City Dragons.
Key Matchups
A: All four games in the A pool mean a lot...my spidey senses say the tie-breaker formula may get used Saturday night.
B: Mahtomedi v. Armstrong...simply awesome, likely a battle for the top seed on the pool.
