PWA/B: Spring Lake Park & Mound Westonka win Panther Tourney

Spring Lake Park hosted their peewee A and peewee B tourneys this past weekend at Forgerty Arena in Blaine.  Sixteen teams (eight in each tourney) competed for the 33rd Panther Classic titles.  In the past, teams entered in this tourney have had good seasons with a number of the teams ending up in state tourneys at both the A and B level.  This year the host Spring Lake Park won the peewee A title beating Andover A 4-0 and Mound Westonka won the peewee B title beating the Spring Lake Park peewee B’s 3-1.

33rd Annual Spring Lake Park Panther Classic

Both tourney formats are eight team bracket play.  The peewee A draw had two District 10 teams (Centennial A and Andover A) matched against one District 8 team (Inver Grove Heights) and one District 6 team (Prior Lake A) in the upper bracket.  In the  peewee A lower bracket, two District 11 teams (#20 ranked Proctor and Duluth East A) were matched against one District 10 team (#6 ranked Spring Lake Park) and one District 6 team (#9 ranked Shakopee).  The peewee B draw matched two District 10 teams (Spring Lake Park and Chisago Lakes) against one District 6 team (Shakopee) and one District 3 team (Armstrong/Cooper) in the upper bracket.  In the lower bracket, four teams from four different districts played each other (District 2’s Mahtomedi played District 5 St. Cloud; District 15 Brainerd played District 3 Mound Westonka).

PWA Upper Bracket

Inver Grove Heights edged Centennial A in the opening game Friday 2-1 behind goals scored by Cooper Bollmann and Josh Painter.  The Heights’ Painter scored the game winner with two minutes left to play.  Centennial’s Jake Hoylo scored in the final minute to cut the Heights lead to 2-1.

Prior Lake A and Andover A had a cliffhanger going in their opening quarterfinal game Friday.  The Lakers held a 2-0 lead late in the third period on goals by Brody Savoie and Cole Pearson when Andover’s Ethan Lindahl scored to cut the lead to 2-1 going into the third period.  The Huskies tied the game with less than five minutes to go on a goal by Logan Gravink to send the game into overtime.  Andover won 3-2 on a shootout.  

Andover A and Inver Grove Heights battled to a 2-2 tie late in the third period in Saturday’s first semifinal game before the Huskies scored twice in the last two minutes of play to win 4-2.  The Heights Ryan Schwartz scored unassisted in the first minute of the opening period to give IGH a 1-0 lead.  The Huskies Victor Moyer tied the game five minutes later.  The game remained tied until Moyer scored again with thirty seconds left in the second period.  With four minutes left in the game, the Heights’ Justin Warrick scored to tie the game again 2-2.  A minute later, Andover’s Kylan Andrzcyzak scored the game winner.  With just under two minutes to play, Logan Gravink got the insurance goal.  Andover A won 4-2 and went on to play Spring Lake Park in the championship game Sunday.

PWA Lower Bracket

Spring Lake Park opened the lower bracket play beating Proctor 7-1 with Blake Lueck getting the hat trick.  Lueck added two assists to make it a 5 point game.  Spring Lake Park scored three goals late in the second period to take a 4-0 lead into the third period.  Lueck had two of the Panthers first four goals, Mason Roloff and Brock Larsen each scored one.  Proctor’s Conner Bushbaum scored in the first minute of the third period to cut the lead to 4-1 only to have the Panthers strike twice in the next minutes with Lueck’s third goal and a score by David Spenny.  The Panther’s Rack Mack scored a minute later to end the scoring 7-1.

Shakopee beat Duluth East A 5-0 in their quarterfinal game.  The Sabres scored three times in the second period to take a 4-0 lead into the third period.  Shakopee’s David Biouette scored twice in the game and Matthew Loiselle, Luke Schmitz, and Abraham Melek each scored once.  The Sabres outshot the Hounds 28-15 in the game.

Spring Lake Park beat Shakopee 5-3 in the second semifinal game Saturday.  The Sabres took a 3-1 lead halfway through the game and immediately gave up a goal thirty seconds later.  Shakopee held on to the 3-2 lead for the rest of the second period and most of the third period before the Panthers rallied with three goals in two minutes late in the third.  Spring Lake Park’s Wyatt Noble opened the scoring with a first period goal.  Shakopee’s Gavin Hintze tied it 1-1 just as the first period was ending.  The Sabres Abraham Melek and Jere Huson scored goals early in the second period before Jacob Fritz cut the lead to 3-2.  The Panthers Brock Larsen scored with just under five minutes left to tie the game 3-3; two minutes later, Blake Lueck scored the game winner; and thirty seconds later, Larsen added the insurance goal.  Spring Lake Park won 5-3 and played Andover A in Sunday’s championship game.

PWA Consolation Round

Centennial A edged Prior Lake A 1-0 in overtime in the first peewee A consolation game played Saturday.  The Cougars and the Lakers battled evenly through the first two periods, the Lakers had a chance to win the game applying pressure in the third period.  Early in the overtime, the Cougars’ Alex O’Hara scored the game winner. 

In the second consolation semifinal, Proctor took a 2-0 lead in the first period, held on to that lead through a scoreless second period, and scored twice early in the third period.  With six minutes left on the clock in the third period, the Rails led the Hounds 4-0 behind goals scored by Conner Paviowich, Vance Johnson, Connor Bushbaum and Dylan Haala.  Then the Hounds rallied.  With six minutes to go, Will Weinkauf scored to cut the lead to 4-1.  With just under two minutes to go, Duluth East’s Colby Larson scored a power play goal to cut the lead to 4-2 and with a minute left to go, the Hounds Caleb Keenan scored unassisted to cut the lead to 4-3.  But the Hounds could not get the tying the goal in the final minute.  Proctor beat Duluth East A 4-3.

Peewee A Sunday Games

In the Peewee A Championship game Spring Lake Park beat Andover A 4-0.  The Panthers took a first period lead behind two goals scored by Brock Larsen, scored once in the second period with Ben Mack getting the goal, and scored once in the third period with Blake Lueck getting the goal.  The Panther forwards were just too quick in the Andover defensive zone for the Andover defense.       

Shakopee’s peewee A took third place by beating Inver Grove Heights 4-0.  The Sabres’ Matthew Loiselle scored in the opening period, Abraham Melek and Jere Huson added second period goals, and Melek scored late in the third to end the scoring 4-0.  Three of Shakopee’s four goals were scoring on the power play. 

Proctor beat Centennial A 4-2 for Consolation title behind two goals and an assist scored by Conner Pavlowich.  The Rails took the lead on a goal by Wyatt Okstad scored halfway through the opening period.  A minute after Okstad scored, Cade Anderson scored for the Cougars to tie the game 1-1 at the end of the first period.  In the opening minutes of the second period Pavlowich went to work scoring twice to put the Rails up 3-1.  Pavlowich’s second goal proved to be the game winner.  Proctor’s Vance Johnson added a third period insurance goal in the Rails 4-2 win.    

Prior Lake A and Duluth East A battled in a scoreless game for most of three periods before the Lakers’ Alexander Leanar scored to give Prior Lake a 1-0 lead with five minutes left on the clock.  Three minutes later, the Hounds Will Weinkauf scored to tie the game 1-1 and send it into overtime.  Prior Lake’s Josh Rients got the game winning score two minutes into overtime.  Prior Lake won 2-1 for seventh place.

PWB Upper Bracket

Shakopee beat Chisago Lakes 4-0 and Spring Lake Park edged Armstrong 6-5 in quarterfinal games.  In the first semifinal game played Saturday morning, Spring Lake Park edged Shakopee 4-3.  The Panthers built a three goal lead through most of the first and second period behind scoring from Devin Fairbanks, Justin Boyd, and Caden Carsen.  The Sabres rallied with two goals in the last two minutes of the second period to cut the Panther lead to 3-2.  Shakopee got scoring from Ben Palmieri and Evan Hansen.  Halfway through the third period, Spring Lake Park’s Justin Boyd scored the game winner.  Shakopee rallied again.  With a minute left to play, Ben Smith scored to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Sabres could not tie the game in the final minute of play.

PWB Lower Bracket

Mahtomedi beat St. Cloud 4-2 in the Zephyrs in the first quarterfinal game.  Mound Westonka broke open a 0-0 game with three goals late in the first period and went on to beat Brainerd 8—0 in the second semifinal game.  Jackson Studebaker, Ethan Wagner, and Dominic Musel scored for the White Hawks in the opening period.  Halfway through the second period, Aiden Mjelstad scored to put Westonka up 4-0.  Wagner and Mjelstad each scored again in the third period, Aidan O’Donnell and Ethan Dominy added goals as Mound Westonka won 8-0.

Mound Westonka beat Mahtomedi 3-0 in the lower bracket semifinal game Saturday getting scoring from three different players.  Ethan Wagner scored in the opening period to put the White Hawks up 1-0.  Dylan Osborn scored in the second period and Kyle Schmidt scored in the third.  Mound Westonka outshot the Zephyrs 26-13 in the game.

PWB Consolation Round

Armstrong broke open a tight 2-0 game halfway through the second period scoring three goals in a minute to take a 5-0 lead into the third period.  The Wings scored three more goals in a minute early in the third period to take an 8-0 lead and beat Chisago Lakes 10-1.  Armstrong’s Nathan Omodt got the hat trick scoring three goals (and assisting on a fourth goal).  The Wings Anders Johnson scored twice; Jeffrey Raymond, AJ Pauly, Evan Marshalek, Joey Potter, and Jonathon Essen scored once.  Jacob Willman scored the lone Chisago Lakes goal. 

Brainerd beat St. Cloud 3-2 in the second consolation semifinal.  St. Cloud rallied from a 2-0 deficit at the end of the first period to tie the game 2-2 with four minutes left to play.  The Warriors got first period scoring from Cooper Cousino and Cole Mackcow.  St. Cloud’s Samuel Wilkins scored the lone goal in the second period and Kyle Longstrom scored the tying third period goal.  With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Isaac Bkaer scored the game winner.

Peewee B Sunday Games

Mound Westonka beat host Spring Lake Park 3-1 in Sunday’s Peewee B Championship game.  Spring Lake Park’s Justin Boyd scored early in the first period to put the Panthers up 1-0.  Boyd’s goal was the only goal given up in the tournament by the White Hawk goalies Beau Odash and Elijah Goetz.  The White Hawks’ Aidan O’Donnell scored in the opening period to tie the game 1-1 going into the second period.  Mound Westonka’s Dominic Musel scored the game winner in the second period to give the White Hawks a 2-1 lead.  O’Donnell scored again in the third period to make the final score 3-1.     

In the third place game, Shakopee beat Mahtomedi 3-1.  The Sabres withstood first period pressure from the Zephyrs and broke open a tight 0-0 game with two late second period goals by Ben Smith and Riley Pederson.  The Sabres added an early third period goal by John Kettle to take a 3-0 lead.  Mahtomedi’s Michael Farrell scored late in the third period to end the game 3-1.   

Brainerd edged Armstrong 2-1 for the consolation title .  The Warriors’ Keegan Davidge scored in the first two minutes of the opening period and Brainerd held onto the lead until Armstrong tied the game two minutes into the third period.  Brandon Northrup got the Armstrong goal.  Two minutes after the game was tied, Brainerd’s Rodney Campbell scored the game winner, an unassisted power play goal. 

St. Cloud beat Chisago Lakes 10-1 in the seventh place game Sunday scoring four goals in the opening period and six in the second period.  The third period went to Chisago Lakes with Benjamin Jinks scoring the lone Wildcat goal.  Four St. Cloud players (Collin Hess, Kyle Longstrom, Samuel Wilkins, and Isaac Bkaer) each scored twice in the game.  Brennan Thielen and Jackson Henderson each scored once.
